My Man

Disclaimer: Satine does not belong to me. Big shock, right?
Song: My Man from Funny Girl, by Barbra Streisand

Satine adjusted her veil in her mirror. This was to be the most important performance of her life. She could not mess this one up.

Oh, my man I love him so
He'll never know
Oh, my life is just despair
But I don't care

Satine knew what would happen if she didn't do this. Christian would be killed.

If only she could make him understand that she was doing this because she loved him.

She shook her head sadly. She knew what Christian would see. The icy, cold Sparkling Diamond, not the Satine he knew and loved. All he would see was the Diamond, shattering his heart.

When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright
All right

Christian made all the pain go away, made the darkness retreat, made her feel safe.

Feel loved.

One loving glance, one brush of the fingertips was all it took.

What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back
On my knees someday

I knew it could never be, she told herself firmly. You were only setting yourself up.

Besides, what could they do? Run away? A cruel joke. The Duke would find them. He probably kill Christian right in front of me.

Satine didn't know what she would do once Christian was gone. She wasn't quite sure that she wouldn't shrivel up and die, if she didn't die from disgust when she had to sleep with the Duke.

Ugh. The Duke.

For whatever my man is
I am his
Forevermore

Christian. She had mistaken him for a Duke. And she had fallen in love with him then.

A love that hadn't faded when she found out he was a writer, even though she tried to force herself.

It doesn't matter what he is. I love him anyway.

Oh, my man I love him so
He'll never know
Oh, my life is just despair
But I don't care

It didn't matter what pain she would have to endure. As long as Christian was safe, nothing else mattered.

When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright
All right

Satine would remember him for the rest of her life. She would remember every kiss, every caress, every word. She would remember how she made her feel for as long as she lived.

What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back
On my knees some day

She knew that if she so chose, she could relay with body language that she still loved him. She could tell him to leave.

But he wouldn't. He would never leave her, no matter what risk to himself.

That was why this act was so important.

For whatever my man is
I am his

She would be his. Her heart would always belong to him.

She lifted her head and smoothed down a stray hair. Perfection achieved, she turned.

Forevermore
