Remus loved his wife.
Really. He did.
But sometimes, she still didn't get it.
She thought she did, but she was wrong.
For no one but Remus truly understood.
No one comprehended that even with the Wolfsbane potion on board and no hair on his back, there were some things about himself he could never deny.
Some things that were with him always, not just at the full moon.
Things he usually managed to control, but that sometimes threatened to overwhelm him completely.
And one thing… one thing in particular that drove him nearly to insanity.
He tried to keep the peace. He tried to eat everything Tonks attempted to cook. Really. He did.
But tonight… tonight he couldn't stand the thought of one more plate of overcooked chicken or undercooked vegetable lasagna.
No. Tonight, he'd made an excuse to miss dinner.
Tonight, he escaped a torrential downpour by ducking into The Leaky Cauldron.
He wasn't alone in this. The place was packed. Remus grimaced. This wasn't exactly his ideal environment. Still, he searched the bar for an empty table. He was hungry, after all. He didn't find one. He did, however, spot a familiar face.
He made his way to a corner booth and stood nearby until the table's solitary diner noticed him.
"May I join you?" he asked.
A nod was the only answer, but Lupin rightfully took it as consent and settled himself into the booth.
He studied the silent man across from him and was likewise studied over a plate of truly rare steak.
Four eyes stared into each other for what seemed an eternity before both men suddenly understood.
They understood in a second what wives would never grasp.
After a moment and still without a word, Bill Weasley slid his plate across the table.
