Morton's Fork

E/O Drabble Challenge: word count 100

Challenge word: include a metaphor

Warnings: Season 6 episode 11. Dean has failed Death's test and faces a grim choice.

Dean stares through the peep-hole in the rusty iron door, teetering on the edge of a dark and bottomless precipice. If he falls now, there'll be no picking himself up, dusting himself down - no carrying on.

He closes the shutter with a hand he is blankly surprised to see is perfectly steady; which doesn't seem right, given the way his insides are churning.

This Sam is more dangerous than most monsters Dean has ever faced. If he can't save his brother now….

The words slip out, though he knows Bobby has no answer.

"What am I supposed to do?"

A/N Morton's Fork is a choice between two equally unpleasant alternatives. That is where Dean was before Death gave him a third option by offering to give Sam his soul back after all. I really think he was considering killing Soulless Sam when he was looking at his brother through the panic room door, having seen with his own eyes that that version of Sam was capable of anything, should he let him live.
