Pinepaw was very excited. His mentor, Firesmoke, said that he was almost ready to become a warrior the day before. He walked over to his mentor. "Firesmoke," he said, "Can I go on the dawn patrol with you?" he asked him. Firesmoke looked around at Thornbranch, Thunderclap, and Mintleaf. "Do you mind?" he asked them. "No, I don't mind," Thornbranch said. "Sure he can," Thunderclap said. "Of course he can!" Mintleaf said. "It could be good training," she added. "Sure," Firesmoke answered Pinepaw. "Yes!" Pinepaw said. "But don't make a lot of sound," Thornbranch warned, "We're going to see if SideClan is hunting on our territory." They all walked off into the woods, as silent as if they were stalking a rabbit. Pinepaw saw a mouse. He looked over at Firesmoke, who nodded. He crouched, but before he could pounce, the SideClan deputy killed it and snatched it up. He ran back to his camp, not knowing that Pinepaw had seen him. "Firesmoke, Firesmoke!" yowled Pinepaw, "I just saw the SideClan deputy! He took my prey!" "Shh," said Firesmoke, "All of SeaClan just heard you. But we're going to need more proof." Firesmoke whispered. They wandered off some more until Fernpaw, a SideClan apprentice, and Mudheart, her mentor wandered into sight. The four SeaClan cats hid in the bushes nearby. They watched as the apprentice stalked her pray before pouncing, even though she didn't catch the bird. "Very good," said Mudheart. "But next time stalk the wagtail like this." She showed her apprentice the correct way to stalk the bird and killed it. "Let's get back to camp before some SeaClan cats see us," Mudfoot said. They walked back toward SideClan territory. Pinepaw got excited. He couldn't hold himself in. "We saw you! We're going to tell Starlingstar! You're gonna be in so much trouble at the next jamboree!" "Shh!" Mintleaf said. But he was too late. The SideClan cats were getting ready for a fight, extending their claws and arching their backs. "Run!" Thunderclap screamed. They all started running. But soon they found out that they were surrounded. They could only fight and hope that there would be more SeaClan cats coming.
