Leland was afraid of needles. He never liked needles as a kid and as an adult he liked them even less. One time he had started to say something… as he always did and saw a needle. He passed out. Needless to say Leland was afraid of needles.
One day near Christmas while Leland was talking with someone his phone rang.
"Yeah he's here… w-when? Is she- yeah well don't. She what? Okay, okay we'll be right there"
He hung up the phone.
"Leland? What is it? Something happen?"
Leland looked at his friend and sighed before speaking.
"It's Trudy," Leland began, "Her car was bombed. She lost an arm… which they were able to reattach but she's fading fast. We have to get down to St. Judges."
When they got down Leland talked to the doctor while Monk paced the room crying and worried.
"Capt. your friend's wife lost a lot of blood so unless we can find a donor who is O- blood type… the blood banks are depleted and again unless we can find an O- blood type she's not going to make it"
"I'm O neg," Leland said.
His eyes widened as he said that. What the hell was he thinking? He was terrified of needles. He was more terrified of losing his friends.
The doctor gave him a paper to sign saying he was willingly giving his blood. He signed it before he lost his nerve. He was taken into the room where they receive blood. As he closed his eyes he felt the needle pierce his skin and he felt the sting of the needle. Normally he would scream but at that point he knew it was worth it.
The whole thing took about an hour and ½ until it was done. After Trudy was asleep Monk came down to the waiting room to talk with Leland.
"How is she," Leland asked.
"She's going to be fine," Monk said, "Thanks to you. You faced one of your biggest fears for my- for our sake"
"I was scared of the needle," Leland said, "but I was terrified of what would happen if I didn't do it"
"I think I understand that," Monk said, "and even if I don't I love you for this."
"Yeah Monk," Leland said, "I love you too. You're like a brother to me"
Leland meant that and he proved it by proving that FRIENDSHIP IS GREATER THEN FEAR.
