Tomorrow May Not Come
A/N: For Logan.
He didn't want to feel it, the sting of flesh splitting, steel piercing his body, blood escaping parted lips. The thought alone had been too horrid to bear, and had led him to decide how he wanted to go, even before engaging in this foolish masquereade
He wanted to die without feeling.
There would be no pain when he perished, just the ecstacy, the knowledge, that he'd done everything in his power to survive. That last bit of strength would slip from his fingertips, and he would be wrapped in that peaceful embrace of death and rest.
But she, his loved one, would be left behind to mourn him.
He was numb, the world moving in slow motion. He didn't care that he was going to die, that he hadn't been able to react in time to save himself. Had he been able to feel, perhaps instinct would have taken over, urging him forward. It would be a thrill, bringing this traitor to his knees, lording victory over him. It would be the same as saying that he'd conquered death.
But it wasn't so.
It was a dark expanse before him, electric lights flickering in the distance over the blackened sea. But, before he slipped away, there was only light and her smile.
This was inspired by a truly horrid event. A good friend of mine passed away on Saturday, and in a tragic car accident. I understand that this has nothing to do with fanfiction, but I'd like to ask all of you who are reading to impress the importance of seatbelts upon those you love. They aren't foolproof, but the chances of survival are far greater when they're used as they're suppossed to be. I can't say that my friend would have lived had he worn his, but I'm sure that his chances would have been better.
You're loved, Logan. Thank you for bringing light and wonderful music to me.
