Summary: Konoha is on the verge of madness. The Uchiha Clan believes that Konoha's council is planning for their extinction, while the Konoha council believes the Uchiha are planning to overthrow the government. Both parties couldn't have been more right about their predictions for each other. Therefore, it's up to two shinobi to stop either side from proceeding with their plans -that will no doubt cause a war within Konoha- with a marriage proposal. Non-mass. Rated M. Shisui x Sakra paring with other side pairings.
Prologue
"Haruno Sakura, will you marry me?" The charming, curly haired Uchiha asked from his knelt position and Sakura couldn't help but admire how good of an actor he was. People were buying it, all around them. She knew that right outside the most popular restaurant in Konoha square was the perfect place for a chummy romantic proposal.
Sakura smiled widely and faked a couple happy tears, then nodded profusely, as if her breath had been taken right from her lungs, momentarily.
"Yes, Shisui!" She stated then, as soon as he stood to his feet She jumped into his arms, adding to the effect that she was oh so deeply in love with him.
"You're good." He murmured into the crook of her neck. Sakura grinned against the button up shirt he was wearing. Shisui then looked up towards the crowd of people he and Sakura had attracted.
"Let it be known, Haruno Sakura is officially off the market!" Shisui declared with a megawatt grin. He didn't wait for the crowd's responses, instead, he flickered himself and Sakura back into the safety of her apartment.
Sakura unlatched herself from Shisui, flopped onto the couch and sighed, "How do you think we did? Do you think those old bags will buy it?" She asked referring to both the Uchiha clan's council and Konoha's council.
Shisui shrugged, "Just swell. You're a good actor." He paused then added, "I think that as long as Mikoto believes the engagement to be true then, we're gold."
Sakura turned away from him and frowned. Mikoto was the sweetest woman she'd ever met and to lie to her, it was bound to be painful. The Uchiha Matriarch had been a second mother to her ever since her parents had passed away last fall. Thus, it would be like lying to her mom. However, Shisui is right. If Mikoto believes the engagement to be true then she could easily enough convince the council members that it's not some ploy, even know that, being a ploy, and preventing what feels like the inevitable is exactly what Shisui and Sakura are trying to do.
Shisui picked up Sakura's legs and sunk into the couch beside her, letting her legs fall onto his lap. Shisui and Sakura had always been close friends due to her position as a healer and his position as a rowdy Anbu captain. Sakura can recall on one-to-many occasions when Shisui would come in with a set of broken ribs, protesting that he was perfectly fine. Really, male shinobi were the worst. Long story short: she was one of the few medics that could successfully make Uchiha Shisui stay in a hospital bed to get the rest that he needed.
When Sakura had finished her training with Tsunade at fifteen, she was employed at the hospital and worked there till she turned sixteen. Around the age of sixteen was when she signed up for the jonin exams and passed said exams with flying colors, and since then she has split her time between working in the field and working at the hospital. Although Tsunade informed her that she could pass the Anbu exams with little to no difficulty, Sakura refrained from dedicating her life to just killing. If she was going to kill, then she was going to heal as well. All her field work revolved around Shisui and his team that was made up of himself, Shikamaru, Neji, and Genma. Then, on occasion, she would accompany them.
However, her current life was being put on hold to deal with Konoha's council members. Danzo to be specific, the guy -who Sakura swears is old as dirt- that still strongly believes in discrimination against the Uchiha Clan. On the other end of the spectrum, Shisui -with the help of Itachi- is trying to persuade Fugaku and the Uchiha Clans council that Konoha is not planning something against them. From the outside view that both Sakura and Shisui had, it was clear that they stationed themselves to be caught in the crossfire of everything with the marriage proposal but, if that's what it took to defuse the possibility of a war within their own walls... then, that was exactly what the two of them were going to do, stand in the middle of it all.
Sakura massaged her temples, just thinking about it all gave her a major headache. She and Shisui declared that it was a tricky and delicate situation that could only be narrowly avoided with some form of a political marriage. The conclusion didn't take long to come to, and when the idea came up, the both of them agreed to it like they weren't throwing their lives away for the sake of Konoha. There's no doubt in neither Shisui or Sakura's minds that the news of their engagement was already spreading like wild fire. Meaning that they'd have to explain to all of Konoha that their marriage is real, and that it was not for the sole purpose of narrowly avoiding a coup d'etat or the massacre of a clan. Because in all reality it was fake. The marriage and the lives they were about to live, it would be fake for the sake of Konoha and its people until they came up with a better solution. And under no circumstances were the higher ups -the two councils that were trying to start a war- able to know about their marriage being a sham.
Shisui lifted Sakura's legs up off the couch, effectively snapping her from her daze then sat down in the now empty spot, her legs resting on his lap.
"Do you think this will work?" Sakura asked while biting her lip. She hated that she needed reassurance so often but she couldn't help herself.
"No doubt about it hun-bun." He reassured her while simultaneously trying out his new nicknames he had lined up in the back of his mind.
"Hun-bun?" Sakura questioned with a slender pink brow.
Shisui grinned, "Just trying out new nicknames my sunflower."
Sakura narrowed her eyes, "Don't call me that."
"Mah, Mah, Sugar-plum I-" His sentence was cut off by a pillow that making contact with his face, an alarming amount of force behind the usually comforting object.
Their banter and teasing commenced and for the moment the world around them was shut out. No Clan's, no councils, no talks of overthrowing the government, and no talks about the destruction of a Clan. It was just pure bliss.
As Sakura lunged at Shisui -pillow in hand- and she couldn't help but grin back at his shameless smile and bright eyes that were moving towards her with equal -playful- vigor. Somewhere in the back of her mind, her inner persona acknowledged a fact, 'It wouldn't be so bad spending a lifetime with him, ne?'
