Forever, Forever
Night has long since fallen in Mystic Ruins, yet two animals remain awake: Sonic and Amy. They are not far from Tails' house, sitting side by side in the cool night air, legs stretched out before them on lush grass, necks craned back. His and her eyes, locked on the star spangled sky, are not looking for an escape route or screaming for attention. This is a rare moment between the two, a time when their game of cat and mouse is paused.
Sonic's voice pierces the perfect silence. "Do you want me to run you home?"
Amy considers his question. The thought of him holding her in his arms as they speed toward her house is pleasant, but the thought of this moment ending any sooner than it must is not. "Are you that eager to get rid of me?"
Sonic chuckles, turning his gaze on her. "No, not particularly." The edges of her lips lift, and his heart flutters. "I'll be at Emerald Town's Other Burger Shop tomorrow morning at eight if you want to start chasing me then," he says suddenly.
The corners of her mouth lower and she sighs. "Must you always talk?"
Sonic chuckles again, the sonance forced. "I'm in love with the sound of my own voice." Amy's smile returns, lager but tighter. His heart sinks, and his gaze returns to the stars.
He wonders, not for the first time, if Amy is growing tired of him. He wonders if Amy no longer wishes to play the game he lives for but to find a nice guy who will sit in companionable silence on a starry night with his arm draped around her shoulder. Sonic cannot do something as simple as that. Amy must be growing tired of him, he thinks.
He does not blame her. If he were her—
"What are you thinking about?"
He looks at her to find her looking at him. Her eyes are narrowed, and he knows that she knows what he's been thinking. "Nothing."
"Don't lie. Just tell me."
"I was wondering…"
"You were wondering…"
"I was wondering if you want to find someone else."
She sighs and rolls her eyes. "Then why don't you just ask me?"
He gulps. "Amy, do you want to start seeing someone else?"
When her mouth opens, he knows what she is going to say but still fears she'll say something else. "No."
His shoulders relax, and he suddenly realizes they were tensed. Happy, his arm lifts and drops around her shoulders. Her eyes widen, his soften. "Sonic…" Whatever she wanted to say goes unsaid, and she turns her gaze back to the stars, a most contented smile curving her lips.
Still looking at her, he inquisitively says her name. She 'hmms' a response. "How long do you think you'll chase me?"
She leans her head on his shoulder. "Forever." Silence. "Sonic?"
"Hmm?"
"How long will you run?"
"Forever."
"Then be ready to run at eight."
"I'll be ready."
