A/N: Since there seems to be no end of this series in sight, I thought I'd put up the titles of all of the one shots at the beginning of each story. They can be read in any order, this is just how they've been written.
Rain Brings Growing Things
A Story to Help You Sleep
The Devil Finally Thought to ask Forgiveness
Did the Shining Prince Court the Golden Princess
I Know What Will Make You Feel Better
I Like When You Play
Feel free to leave prompts of what you want to see in other one shots.
Dedicated to Fell4 for her prompt of John, Elly and a piano
John had an amused smile on his face as he watched Elly run around the ballroom, thoroughly amused by the echoes she created with her voice and body. He stayed at the piano and began to run his hands over it. Thankfully it was still in tune. Playing a piano was something he could do. Tuning one was not. He let his fingers glide over the keys, playing bits and pieces of old melodies that he remembered.
After a while Elly decided she was tired of making noise and hearing echoes. She came to slump against John as being that active had worn her out. "I like when you play, grandpa. Why don't you play more often?"
John shrugged as he continued making up melodies. "Because most places we stay at don't have a piano. And if they do, it's usually not in tune."
"In tune?"
"It's a musical term."
Elly nodded and just listened for a moment. Then she interrupted the laying as she crawled into her grandfather's lap. John was torn between amusement and annoyance. He decided to go with amusement because it was easier on both of them. "Can you sing me something, grandpa?"
John considered it. "If you sing with me."
"Can we sing my music box song?"
John had to think about that one. Then he remembered the battered old music box that Elly had found in a shop recently. She was enchanted by the song it played, even more so when John taught her the words to the song. Slowly John began to play the simple melody. "Sun and wind blow/Honeymooners at last alone/Feeling far above par/Oh, how lucky we are/" He paused for the shortest of moments. "Ready?"
Elly nodded and added her treble voice to the music. "While I give to you and you to me/ True love, true love/So on and on it will always be/True love, true love/. For you and I have a guardian angel on high/with nothing to do/but to give to you and to give to me/love forever true."
They sang through the song several times before Elly sighed as she pressed closer to John. "Something wrong?" he asked, switching to random melodies again.
"Something's very right," she declared.
John swallowed his amusement. He had a feeling Elly was having one of her solemn moments and it wouldn't' do for him to snicker. She would think he was making fun of her. Really, though, she was too adorable sometimes. "And what is it that's so right?"
Elly leaned against her grandpa's shoulder and looked to the once grand ceiling. "I like this place, grandpa. Can we stay here for a while?"
"I think we can."
"Good."
