This is a missing scene from Usual Suspects, from immediately before Linda Hunt walking into Dean's interview room after seeing the ghost. Without that lifeline, how would Dean be planning his escape? Highly cheesy. Be warned.

Partners in crime

He's got my back, and I've got his. Even when I'm being held on suspicion of murder and I can't see any way out, I've got faith in Sammy.

Partly, it's that this is not an entirely unexpected scenario. Break into enough crime scenes and you're bound to get caught, by the law of averages. Just like poker.

So with this in mind we laid a few plans, re-runs of old tried and tested alibis with some new tweaks. If all our lies were true, Dad woulda had enough old army buddies to fill San Francisco.

The plan is good, it's worked before, so I know he'll follow it. Which leaves me handcuffed to a desk and him on the run. Time seems to be a factor here so we're not waiting for him to be cleared normally.

He hasn't even got an arrest file. I can't believe it. There's a Winchester on the right side of the law – on paper, anyway. He's out there, he'll solve the mystery of Ashland, salt-and-burn and generally be psychic hunter geek boy Sammy. Stop the spirit, save the day.

Which leaves me handcuffed to a desk, having made a true confession of my activities which no court will ever believe and seriously pissed off a number of cops.

On the plus side, the confession might get me off the death penalty on the grounds of insanity. Unfortunately the only things I can think of right now in association with mental asylums are that grade-A wacko Dr Ellicott and my man Jack in 'One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest'. On second thoughts, it's not really a plus side.

I so can't see a way out here.

He probably left because he thought I had a plan. I can't imagine him leaving me in trouble…and that is the only plan I have. He's got my back, he's saved me from certain death before this, so my plan is to trust Sam to take over. On the hunt and in the aftermath.

Of course, that doesn't mean I'm just gonna sit here. There's a paperclip on the file across the desk…
