An overwhelming emptiness drove the young Avatar to the cliff side, her softened leather boots barely making a sound as they scuffed the earth. After a moment, her shoulders lurched slightly as a sob was suppressed, though it didn't stop the tears that were determined to wet her cheeks, dripping from chin to chest. Slowly, she stood on the brink, overlooking the churning water below as a single tear fell downward, glistening in the sun.
With hands clenched at her sides, Korra braced herself, feet shoulder-width apart as fear, anger, and devastation set in completely. With her bending gone, she was nothing. Being the Avatar had been her identity since such a young age, and with that title gone, she was left nothing but a hollow shell with no will to live. Letting out a breath, she tensed to jump, but paused when a familiar, cold nose nudged her shoulder. Without looking back, she placed a hand on the animal's head.
"Guess I've reached a new low, huh, Naga?" Korra rasped quietly. Slowly, she turned to look at her oldest friend. "Take care of Bolin for me, okay girl? Please do that for me." She stepped away from the polar bear-dog, holding both hands out in front of her to discourage Naga from following. When her heels touched the very edge of the cliff, she swallowed hard, feeling a dizzying sensation overcome her. Then, she fell.
Naga's alarmed roar filled her ears as she toppled head over heels through the air. At a loss, Korra just closed her eyes and waited for impact. She hit the water hard, and for a split second there was agony. Hitting the sea from such a height was like hitting concrete; her bones were broken, shattered, and blood began to pool internally as she sunk.
Korra obtained once last glimpse of the sky, so blue and pure before the waves forced her under. Maybe, she would finally have her peace. Maybe, she would find herself again in the spirit world. Her lungs screamed, making her attempt to draw a breath. Bubbles rose to the surface, proving she had some fight left in her, but there was no other struggle. Korra resigned to her decision, and soon, she was gone, leaving behind a broken legacy.
This was the beginning of an Avatar, and the end of all that followed.
