Arms interlinked with Kaito, lying curled up together in their bed, feeling the warmth of his boyfriend's embrace, Shinichi heard the magician whisper into his ear, "Do you know what day it is tomorrow?"
Shinichi didn't. He didn't know the date, nor why Kaito would be so interested in him being aware of it, so he didn't answer, just snuggled up closer to the other man and let himself slowly drift into unconsciousness.
Shinichi awoke to an empty bed and the shrill, ear-splitting ring of the alarm that he'd set on his phone. Sitting up, glancing around their stuffy apartment, Shinichi realised that he was alone. That Kaito was gone.
The date, displayed in big bold letters on Shinichi's lock screen, was April 1st. April 1st, commonly referred to as April fools day, was the day in which pranks and tricks were as rampant as the 'fools' who fell for them.
Shinichi wasn't going to fall for any of Kaito's tricks.
Shinichi slowly sat up, felt the way the bed sheets shifted beneath him, made sure that nothing felt off. He tentatively pressed one foot into the carpet, then another, he hadn't found any tricks, any traps. Yet.
In terms of pranks, Shinichi's boyfriend, once Kaito Kid, was a master, a force to be reckoned with. However Shinichi, a professional detective, someone who'd played a large role in the takedown of a major criminal organisation, wasn't going to go down so easily.
By the time Shinichi had shuffled round the apartment, warily got dressed, the door had creaked open.
It was Kaito who entered, hair ruffled from the spring wind, a large bouquet of flowers in his hands and one of his smirks on his face. He offered the bouquet to Shinichi, held the bundle of roses and daffodils out so he could take them.
Shinichi didn't take them. He stared at Kaito's grin, at the flowers, and sighed, "This is some kind of prank, isn't it."
Kaito's eyes widened, his fingers twitched. "No, it isn't!" He pouted, his cheeks reddened. "It's the anniversary of our first meeting, remember? Three years to the day."
So it was. It was three years since the black star heist, where the pair had met probably for the first time, where he'd spoken his first word, of countless words, to the thief: 'fireworks'.
Deciding to trust the magician, Shinichi took the bundle into his hands, held it tightly. Nothing happed. Cheeks getting redder by the second, but still baffled by Kaito missing a prank opportunity, he spluttered out, "But, what about April fools?"
"April fools?" A grin, like nothing that Shinichi had ever seen, stretched across Kaito's face. "It's today?"
Before Shinichi could think to reply, a firm warm hand grabbed his and pulled him along, out of the stuffy apartment. The bouquet fell to the ground just before reached the door.
"Forget the flowers," Kaito exclaimed, as they left, eyes lighting up like fireworks, "Let's go cause chaos!"
