After it's all over and the mess is cleaned up, Lucy and her father take Star and Laddie in because the two of them have nowhere else to go. Star absolutely refuses to return back to her abusive step-father's home and Laddie's parents had been killed by Max. It's just one of several tragedies that no one ever talks about in the Emerson household. On the surface, Star is Michael's girlfriend yet she knows that this is not the case. Michael will often disappear for days on end, leaving Star and Lucy filled with a worry and dread that they never talk about. Every now and then, when it's just the two of them on the verandah waiting for dawn and for Michael's arrival, Star will almost voice the fears that are eating away at her heart but one look into Lucy's eyes tell Star to remain quiet.

Neither of them want to voice the same fear that's tearing them apart that Michael's off somewhere in the night looking for a replacement for David. That he's out there looking for another vampire and that it's only really a matter of time before he doesn't come home because he'll have found what he's looking for, leaving both Star and Lucy behind. Star's never quite sure if Lucy subscribes to the belief that if they don't talk about it, then it can't be true. She knows that sometimes she'll overhear the hushed whispers between Michael's mother and grandfather and how they are uncertain as to what they can do. His grandfather always takes a wait-and-see approach while his mother seems to long for some sort of action. Yet in the end Lucy does nothing other than sit on the verandah and wait for her son to arrive back home.

In the mornings when Michael does come home, Lucy will sigh in relief before she touches Star's hand. It's an unspoken ritual between the two of them to hold their quiet vigil together and for Lucy to leave Star to deal with Michael. The last thing that Michael wants is a mother who clucks over him and tries to find out what's happening with her son. He barely tolerates Star when he comes home yet he will still cling to her, allowing her to soothe away the pain. And for a few days, he is her Michael again. The one that saved her from the vampires and the darkness before he melts into the night again, off searching for whatever he had with David; for whatever it was that she stole from him when she asked him to save her.
