(Disclaimer: I own nothing: not the characters, not the storyline, not the song. Those belong to Stephenie Meyer and Skillet. Enjoy. J )
Edward had finally cracked. I shouldn't interrupt her peace like this, he fretted. She'll undoubtedly be furious at me.
I'm still trying to figure out how to tell you I was wrong
I can't fill the emptiness inside since you've been gone
His phone buzzed; with some surprise, he saw that it was Rosalie.
"Yes?" he said curtly. He was, against his better judgment, about to force himself on the girl he loved, the girl who in all likelihood despised him, and not in the mood for chitchat with his self-absorbed sister.
"I just called to say--that is, I wanted to tell you--the others don't want you to know . . .Edward, Bella's dead."
His long-dormant heart wrenched inside of him.
So is it you? Or is it me?
I know I said things that I didn't mean
But you should have known me by now
You should have known me
Edward was on a plane to Italy within the hour.
Was it because of me? he thought, anguished. Because of the lie I told? But how could she have believed me?
If you believed
When I said that I'd be better off without you
Then you never really knew me at all
If you believed
When I said that I wouldn't be thinking about you
You thought you knew the truth but you're wrong
It had been a huge mistake, he knew. He could sense he was breaking her heart into pieces even when he had been doing it. He had only consoled himself with the hope--how flimsy it sounded now!--that she would get over it, be happier without him.
He would rectify that soon enough. Soon, he could join her.
Edward couldn't believe himself. Bella wasn't dead, had never been dead, and now he had brought her into his life again with a vengeance when she had come racing in to save him. Not only that, he had dragged his favorite sister into it.
But it was over now; they were safe together on her bed. But he had put her in so much danger, alerting her existence to the Volturi . . .
I can't undo the things that led us to this place
But I know there's something more to us than our mistakes
Bella was still fighting him tooth and nail on the issue of immortality. She had even taken it to vote with his family.
So is it you? Or is it me?
I know I'm so blind when we don't agree
But you should have known me by now
You should have known me
He couldn't shake the nagging feeling that she wanted to be changed just to make sure he couldn't leave her again, a thought that pierced him with agony.
If you believed
When I said that I'd be better off without you
Then you never really knew me at all
If you believed
When I said that I wouldn't be thinking about you
You thought you knew the truth but you're wrong
"I'll never leave you again, Bella. I swear," he told her.
'Cuz you're all that I want
Don't you even know me at all?
You're all that I need
Just tell me that you still believe
She leaned forward to kiss him. "I know," she said. "I believe you. But, Edward, it's better this way. Don't you see? We'll be together forever."
He pulled her close. Maybe he could get her to see his side of things in time; he swore to himself that he wouldn't give up. For now though, he had all that he needed right in front of him.
You're all that I need
Just tell me that you still believe
(A/N I know. It didn't line up with the books exactly. But I had to make it fit in the song. What did you think? Review, please!)
