Last Summer

"Dom!" cried Keladry of Mindelan. She had spotted a certain blue-eyed sergeant in the dining hall. Having not seen him for a couple months now, she was quite happy. After what had happened between them last summer, she was feeling warm and fluttery. What she wasn't expecting was for Dom to turn with icy blue eyes towards her. Where was her warm welcome? Her hug? Her kiss?

"Ah. Kel, have I introduced you to my fiancee? Adara, meet Keladry of Mindelan." A petite golden haired beauty next to Dom smiled at Kel.

"Fiancee? When did you…Dom…Nice to meet you, Adara," stuttered Kel. She was shocked, and had just felt her heart break into a thousand pieces. Fiancee? After she had proclaimed her love to him just last summer?

"I'm honored to meet you. Dom has told me so much about your skills as a knight! I've already told him that I want to learn how to use that amazing fan of yours," said Adara. Her pretty blue eyes were a clear sky blue that matched beautifully with Dom's. They sparkled now, and had a look of adoration in them.

"Y-yes. Thank you. Dom, may I speak to you?" said Kel.

"Adara, I'll be back in a minute," murmured Dom to Adara. He turned towards her and kissed her gently on the lips. Kel forced herself to think of a calm lake. A frozen lake. It took all of her years on the Yamani Islands to compose herself, and keep a stone mask on. He was kissing Adara. The love of her life was kissing his fiancee, and it wasn't was a pretty little angel that was the polar opposite of Kel. She turned and walked a bit away, out of hearing distance. Dom followed. As soon as he reached her, Kel let her mask fall.

"Why? Why would you lead me on about how much you love me, and then go an get a fiancee?" spat out Kel. She was so very close to crying.

"Kel. I didn't want to hurt you. I fell in love."

"I thought you were already in love? With me."

"I thought I was. It turned out that it wasn't true love. I saw Adara, and it was like love at first sight. She means everything to me. I'm sorry I hurt you, but I hope you'll accept Adara. Last summer…it was last summer. It was the past, a mistake. I'm sorry. I hope you'll find someone who loves you as much as you love them. I wish you happiness in your future, and I hope you wish for me and Adara's happiness." With that, Dom sighed. It was a long and drawn out sigh of regret. "Please believe me, I didn't want to hurt you." Turning around, he walked back to their friends, to his fiancee. Adara, not Kel.

Kel stood where she was, frozen. She could feel a pain that was growing in her heart. It had shattered, and now was being stomped on even more. Before she realized it, she felt her cheeks being splashed with little droplets of water. Reaching up, she felt tears. With a sob, she turned abruptly, and rushed out of the hall. Running back to her rooms, she flung herself on the bed, and promptly started sobbing for the first time in years. Her breath came fast and unsteady as she gulped in air and cried for a love lost. She cried for her broken heart. She cried. For the innocence and happiness of being in love, last summer.

AN: So, that was my first fanfic! Hope you enjoyed it. Yes, it was rather unhappy :) I usually love happy endings, but I'm listening to my "Sadness" playlist right now, so this plot popped up in my head. R&R please! It'll make me SOOOOO happy!
