Prologue
In the dark stillness of the ruined capital of Extrium a figure wrapped in a heavy black cloak raced through the empty streets. It (the gender, or species for that matter, were un-inteligable) moved very quickly, but silently through the roads and ally ways until it reached the gates to the forest of Verium. It pulled on the large ring to open the gates but they wouldn't budge. It pulled harder, and harder, and harder. It's hood fell back, allowing long tumbling hair to fall around it's shoulders, exposing a face so eternally beautiful it had to belong to a goddess. She swore under her breath, gathered her hair back into her hood and began to summon her magic. All of a sudden, her hands flickered to life with green and purple flames speckled with the gold magic of the gods. She ran her flickering, magic fingers over the locks and mechanisms, hearing them grind and creak as they begun to move. "Snap!" A twig cracked in the near by trees. She extinguished her magic, and stared into the woods. Since the war, all of the gods and magical beings had returned to their magical land, Evertrium and shut the doors forever. Magic had been banned from Extrium, and all magical beings exiled. Kira (the cloaked girl) had not believed her captors when they had told her. That's why she was here, she had to find out for herself. The locks finally clicked open. Kira raced through the gates, along the rocky path, over numerous bridges, until she reached the cliff face. There she began to climb to the ledge where she would find the cave. Finally she reached the top. Even though the night was clear, an icy wind slapped her face, whipping off her hood and making her hair fly everywhere. Kira began to feel along the flat smooth cliff face , searching for a little bump, a button. Her sensitive fingers picked up everything, the little cracks in the rock, the loose gravel and... There! The bump! Kira pressed the button. Nothing happened. She pressed it again, but the door in the back of the cave didn't open the way it had a thousand times before. Kira was getting nervous now. Maybe that wasn't the button, maybe I have the wrong spot! She thought desperately. "Clack, clack, clack!" The sound of a peble falling down to the little creek below made Kira turn, firing her magic as she did. A scream ripped through the night. It was quickly silenced by a flash of light and the woods went dark once more.
