It was strange to see him this way; sitting across from her, adorned in a nice, clean, neatly pressed shirt and pants, hair ... slightly less of a mess than usual. He seemed as if he were almost an entirely different person, and Koto would have thought that he was ... if not for the fact that he'd called her "Idiot" when he met her at the restaurant and was now looking distractedly up at the ceiling, head propped up on his hand.
Koto sat in her seat at the other end of the table and pouted. Her hair was a mess, as usual. The dress she had on was making her uncomfortable, despite the fact that she'd worn boots with it. Yes, boots. Boots were awesome. Luna had tried to teach her how to act more ladylike for her date, but she'd adopted her typical behavior as soon as the first sentence had left Sai's mouth.
In fact, the only reason the two weren't at each other's throats at the moment was because there was a table in-between them, with a fancy white tablecloth, a rose in a pretty little vase, and a whole bunch of fancy food on fancy plates.
This wasn't Koto. This wasn't either of them, really. But when Sai had asked Hibiki where to take a girl for her birthday, this was the advice he had been given.
Sai sighed, poking his food with a fork. He could hardly pronounce the name of this dish ... what was it made of again? Oh, right. It was duck. It wasn't bad, it was just ... not what he was used to.
And the fact that Koto was glowering at him from across the table didn't make things any better.
He rolled his eyes.
"Look, I'm sorry. I had a momentary lapse of judgment, and ordered a bird. Big deal, we both know that we couldn't read the name of that dish."
"You're eating bird."
"Yes, I know, you've said that like a thousand times."
"It's a bird, Sai!"
"Well excuse me for ordering a ..." He snatched a menu off of an empty table and made a face at it. He then pointed at his order and shoved it in Koto's face.
"See? I had to point at that. That's kind of sad. I couldn't have known."
"You shouldn't have come to a place where you can't read the menu, then!"
"Yeah, well, excuse me for trying to make your birthday special, moron!"
Koto crossed her arms over her chest and frowned.
"Let's just get the bill so we can pay and go back home."
Sai sighed, waved their waiter down, and was able to pay for the check without too much more hassle. The two of them stood, Koto opting to walk ahead of him. He let this continue on for about half a mile of the way home before speeding up and catching her arm. She stopped, but didn't look at him.
"Let. Me. Go."
"Look, I know you're mad, but I just want you to know I'm really sorry for how bad this turned out. I was really trying, you know ..."
He let her go, walking ahead of her. Koto remained frozen for a few moments, and then put her hands around her mouth and called out to him.
"THANKS, STUPID!"
Sai looked back, waving a hand with a smirk. Koto grinned, then called out again.
"AND MESS YOUR HAIR UP A LITTLE! YOU LOOK WEIRD LIKE THAT!"
"Isn't that your job?"
"Augh! Jerk!"
Things never changed much between the two of them.
[author's jargon] merry belated christmas, my lovely koto~
