This is really short and really angsty....I was just in the mood to write it.
Alex glanced back to Marissa to see if there was any sign that she didn't really want this. Alex saw Marissa still sitting on the log staring into the fire. Alex sighed and trudged up the beach to her Jeep.
As she drove tears streamed down her face. This was it. They were over. There were no second chances and no do-overs. This was the end.
Her heart felt as it something was squeezing it and it was having trouble pumping. She would feel her hands shaking so she gripped the wheel tighter.
Soon the tears started burning her skin and the silence turned into violent sobs. She pulled to the side of the road so she wouldn't run into someone because her tears were making it difficult to see. She didn't remember how far she'd driven, but she saw a darkened beach in front of her.
She fumbled out of her Jeep and stumbled toward the beach. Her head was pounding and she couldn't see clearly past her tears. A few minutes later, Alex felt her feet become engulfed in water. She kept walking into the water. No noticing or not caring that her clothes were getting soaked.
Once she was up to her waist in water she stared out into the blackness as the waves crashed on her. It felt cleansing, like every time the waves hit her it was somehow washing Marissa away, but when the waves receded the Marissa was back, still on her mind. But the ebb and flow felt good. It was soothing and peaceful. She was the only one on the beach as the black waves crashed against her.
Alex shook her head. This was insane. She trudged back out of the water and laid on the beach looking at the stars and trying to ignore the fact that the way they twinkled was the way Marissa's eyes twinkle.
Alex knew she missed Marissa already and would miss her for a while to come. Her eyes teared up again and she bit her lip to keep them from slipping out.
She pushed herself out of the sand and walked back to her car, wiping the tears away. Trying to wipe Marissa out of her mind. When it didn't work, Alex got in her Jeep, turned the engine on and sped off into the night. She'd given up on forgetting Marissa. Marissa would always be there in the back of her mind. Marissa would always be her last thought before sleep and her first thought in the morning. Marissa would always be the one that got away. Marissa would always have her heart.
