MINDSPRING- I thought Caitlin/Rex needed a little light love. Happy (late) Valentine's Day everybody!
Caitlin strode confidently into the living area where Rex sat, absentmindedly staring at a holo-recording of the latest news. He looked exhausted and worn out, with dark bags under his eyes and a constant, deep frown that was becoming more permanent as the war dragged on. Caitlin tutted quietly, slinging away the hurt she felt whenever Rex came home like this. He was on leave, this time only for a week. Their time together was getting shorter and shorter.
Luckily, fate had made it so he arrived on a very special day.
Caitlin looked at the small, seemingly ordinary package she held in her hands. It was a lovely shade of dark red, with a strange metallic gleam to it. It was held together with a simple white ribbon. She grinned at it before walking over to where he sat and placing it gently in his hands.
His eyes moved from the recording and flashed down to the package, and then searched out her face. She smiled and sat close to him, tucking her knees underneath her.
"What is this?" He asked quietly, his eyes regaining some energy as he turned the package over in his hands. Caitlin felt her heart tug when she noticed the last sunlight of the day catch on the package and throw the color it on his face. She shrugged and simply said, "You're going to have to open it."
He raised his eyebrows, but nevertheless sighed and opened it.
Inside, laying on soft red velvet, was a piece of paper and a simple, smooth gold ring. Rex gently picked up the paper. On it, in very crude Aurebesh, was written:
I just wanted to let you know that I love you. A lot. Happy Valentine's Day, Captain!
Caitlin watched his face as he read the words. A faint smile lit it up, even as the word "Valentine" confused him a little. His shoulders relaxed as he sank back in the couch, finally relaxing. Caitlin leaned over his shoulder and kissed him lightly on the cheek.
"Valentine's Day is the holiday for… lovers, right?" He finally said, picking up the small ring and turning it over in his hands.
"Yes, it is."
"Well, then. Happy Valentine's Day, my love."
