Title: Not Worth It
Summary: Life just wasn't worth living when the woman you loved not only loved one of your friends, she never saw you as anything important in the first place.
Disclaimer: I own nothing but the idea.
Author's Notes: I just think Neville would have felt more for Ginny than anyone supposed.
It was torture, made even worse because she didn't know she was doing it. Every smile, every word, every accidental touch, they all tore his heart to shreds.
When he asked her to the dance he'd been sure she'd say no. A gorgeous, smart, talented girl like her, go out with a bumbling fool like him? Impossible. But she'd said yes, and he'd felt his heart soar. He'd vowed right then to be worthy of her love.
When Ron had carelessly said she should go to the Yule Ball with Harry, he'd felt his heart sink down to his shoes. He had no illusions about which of them would be the better date, him or Harry. But she'd said she was going with him, and that was that, and he'd floated on air for the rest of the day.
Then...that summer, something must have happened between her and Harry, because when he'd seen them at St Mungo's they'd been close...extremely close.
And then the business with Michael Corner, if he'd been a bit bigger, or rather, a bit fitter, he would have punched that no good cheating bastard in the nose. He'd expected Ron or Harry to do something, but they hadn't, making him think maybe, just maybe he had a chance.
He knew that bullshit about Dean and her was a lie. Dean had a 'friends with benefits' thing going on with Lavender Brown, there was no way he'd want to mess that up, leaving him to believe the way was open for him.
That's why he'd come here, to visit her at home...only to find her and Harry snogging by the stream near her house. He'd made his excuses and fled the scene, wanting nothing more than to scream.
Harry had everything. He had the looks, the charm, the money...yes; his parents were dead, but better dead than unable to recognise him. Harry didn't have to live up to an impossible ideal. Just think, if things had been a little different, he could have traded places with Harry. Then he'd be the one with the girl.
Life just wasn't worth living when the woman you loved not only loved one of your friends, she never saw you as anything important in the first place.
