A/N: I decided to write this because I really wanted to do a Resa/Dustfinger fic. Yes, it's my favorite pairing that won't happen because it's forbidden (ooh, how romantic!). This is based on a small scene in Inkdeath, so really minor spoilers.

Disclaimer: I do not own the Inkheart trilogy. Cornelia Funke does.

Resa's eyes widened when she suddenly felt a force pushing her behind the Adderhead's wardrobe. Dustfinger placed a finger upon his lips to signal silence as footsteps were heard, and dragged the unconscious servant with him to the back. Resa looked around as she realized how cramp their space was. She remembered how big the area looked when she was a bird, and how small it really is now that she was back in her normal state.

As she thought this, the footsteps were getting closer, which immediately caused Dustfinger to place himself in front of her. Resa wanted to give a slight hmph at how he thought she needed protection like a damsel in distress, but she kept silent. She could not give themselves away just to prove a point of not being a weakling.

The footsteps soon faded as the men were going another direction, possibly to clean up the Adderhead's bathtub. Relief overcame both of them that the soldiers didn't notice their hiding place.

After waiting for a period of time, Resa began to sweat. How she wished she could change into a bird at that instant than stay cramped in the small space! Having Dustfinger in front of her was no help to the tightness. Dustfinger saw the look of annoyance on her face and smiled slightly. He used his hand to wipe away some of the sweat on her face. When Resa felt his cool hand, she looked up. Without even realizing it, their bodies were very close. Her heart fluttered as his body warmth spread through her like wildfire.

"Oh, it's probably just the seeds still wearing off..." She thought to herself. The two stared at each other silently, trying to communicate through their eyes like in the past. Yes...just like the past, back in Capricorn's village. Without a sound, Resa reached up to his face, touching where his scars once were. Dustfinger's eyes widened in response, but he soon closed them as he felt her tender hand caress his cheek. It was at this moment that time felt like it rewinded itself. That somehow, it was back to the time where they could only rely on each other. Where there was no Mo...no Roxane...no Inkworld...it was just them alone together. That time where the rules were broken, and forbidden was allowed...

"It's safe now."

Resa blinked in surprise when she heard the Fire-Dancer's voice. There were no more voices or footsteps. Dustfinger grasped Resa's hand gently and brought it down. He smiled.

"It's time to go back to reality. We have to find the book and save your husband."

Resa nodded. Time had went back to the present as they stepped out from their hiding place.

The rules were forbidden to be broken now.
