How do You Say Goodbye – Chapter 1
00000000000000000000000000000000000
"Come on Bess, I'm going to be late," says a tall slender girl with strawberry blond hair. She is tapping her left foot impatiently as she waits for her friend to get out of the bathroom.
"Nancy I'm coming, but I don't know why you brought me instead of George," says Bess as she comes out of the bathroom. Bess is a few inches shorter than Nancy and is a buxom blond bombshell.
Nancy just smiles at her friend. Nancy has two best friends who happened to be cousins, Bess Marvin and George Fayne. Bess is vivacious and boy crazy while George is more of a thinker and into sports. "Bess, you know quite well that George is being recruited by UGA for that softball scholarship this weekend and couldn't accompany me to Atlanta. Besides we are going to make a vacation of this trip, I just have to spend this weekend at Emory then you have me for the rest of the week."
"I know Nancy, but why do I have to accompany you to these pre-orientation meetings again?" Bess wines. Bess picks up her purse and starts to follow Nancy out of their hotel room.
Nancy laughs at her friend's impatience. Nancy continues her conversation with Bess as they ride down the elevator to the lobby. "Well there are three reasons. First, I need and objective observer with me at all times, to help keep my head cool, so I don't sign up right now with out checking out the other schools on my list. Next, some time today we will be getting a tour and I want you to help me pick out the most beautiful spot on campus. Lastly, I need you to help me spot all the cute guys. It's been so long I don't think I remember how."
"Now Nancy I know you and Ned dated for four years but I don't think you're going to have problems picking out cute guys. After all I do recall seeing you kiss a rather handsome young man in Egypt." Bess studies her friend to get her reaction. This was the first time Bess has brought up that kiss since they left Egypt. Bess is known as a hopeless romantic and has set up many of her friends. The only person that hasn't been set up by Bess was Nancy and only because she already had a boyfriend, Ned Nickerson. When Nancy had finally decided to go to college after taking two years off, she had also decided that she needed to try dating other people to find out what she really wanted.
Bess is not disappointed, Nancy turned a shade of red that reaches her ears. "That was uncalled for. That was a long time ago Bess, and we decided just to be friends. Besides you were there the last time we meet in San Francisco and anything that had been between us was gone." Nancy says the last sentence with a little disappointment in her voice. Just then the elevator doors open and both girls exit into the lobby.
"Nancy, I'm sorry I just think that with Ned out of the picture Frank Hardy is the perfect match for you." Bess looks at her best friend sheepishly as they walk to Nancy's rental car.
"One of the reasons that I called it off with Ned is because the long distance relationship was hard to maintain. I don't want to start another long distance relationship even if it was with Frank." Nancy said with a sigh getting out her keys to unlock the door.
"Or is it that you don't want to get your heart broken after what you saw in New Orleans?" says Bess getting into the passenger side just as Nancy puts the key into the ignition.
"NO MORE TALK ABOUT FRANK HARDY!" yelled an irate Nancy. Bess has hit a nerve. When Nancy and Frank got together they would always end up flirting with each other even though they both were in love with someone else. They knew that they couldn't have a relationship but they also couldn't help themselves. In New Orlands, Frank had found someone else to flirt with. At the time Nancy was a tad jealous but mostly happy if that was what Frank wanted, but since then she has repeatedly turned down return visits to New Orland's because she doesn't want to run into the other woman.
"Ok, ok. Now what is the first thing you are taking me to?" Bess didn't want to fight with her best friend, but she knew Nancy had feelings for Frank. In Bess's experience this was something that needed to be talked about before it consumes Nancy.
Nancy takes a deep breath and starts the car. After she pulls out of the parking lot she turns to Bess and says, "First there is general seminar on the academic and social attributes that Emery has to offer new students. It should be about 30 minutes, and then there is a tour of campus. Tomorrow there are department seminars about the major studies each department offers."

"If I have to here the word pre-frosh again I'm going to scream." states a frustrated young man as he is walking across Emory's campus. He is of average height, but has a rather broad build that one can tell is all muscles. He has blond hair and striking blue eyes that turned most women into mush.
"Joe, I don't know why you are letting that bother you. I'm the pre-frosh not you," chuckles another young man. They are walking side by side toward the visitors' parking lot. This one is slightly taller standing at about 6' 1'' with a lean figure like that of a martial artist. He has brown hair and eyes.
"That's why I'm upset Frank. Every time I spot a cute girl she goes a head and calls me a pre-frosh without even asking if it's true. And they say it like it's a joke." Joe's tone of voice suggests that he feels betrayed by the opposite sex. He also has a slight frown on his face.
"Well brother of mine, maybe college girls aren't your type. Plus it's just one more day." Frank loved making his brother squirm. He is looking around the parking lot for their rental car. After a minute he spots it.
"Please tell me again how you talked me out of spending my senior spring break with you checking out colleges when I'm going straight into police work?" Joe is following in their father's footsteps. He has decided to work on the force for a while then become a full time private detective.
Frank puts his arm around Joe as they continue walking towards their car. "Well little brother, I just wanted to spend some time with you. This past year I've been working with Dad full time so we don't get to hang out like we use to. I thought since I'm going off to college and you will be going of to the police academy in two months this might be the last opportunity we have to spend time together for a while. Besides this is the only college I'm looking at this week. We have the rest of the week in Atlanta, so you think you can put up with the college girls for one more day?"
"Fine, but I would rather spend my vacation on a case like we use to do," says Joe begrudgingly.
Frank laughs "well who says we won't. After all we are Hardys and as dad would say trouble just seems to find us."
"Yea, even on vacation," says Joe. There is a pause in the conversation until they reached the car. After they both get in Joe jokes "wouldn't it be great if we ran into Nancy then we would defiantly end up with a case to solve."
Frank stiffens and doesn't say anything. He slides into the driver's seat and put the keys in the ignition.
"Hey I was just joking Frank." Joe doesn't like what is happening to his brother. Nancy Drew is one of their good friends. She is an amateur detective just like them, and they have worked together on occasion. Nancy and Frank always got along well, almost to well. At least until Egypt, after having to pretend to be married their relationship was never the same. It is a little more tense and mournful now. Joe always wonders about what exactly happened between them, but Frank has never talk about it.
Frank sighs "I know Joe. I just really don't want to talk about her right know." Lately, truth be told she is never far from his thoughts. He has just broken up with his long term girl friend Callie Shaw. Nancy's name kept coming up during the brake up even though Callie has never met her.
"Ok big brother I can take a hint. What would you like to do about dinner? I'm starved." They have started moving. Frank takes a right turn out of the parking lot.
Frank laughed "Now that's more like it. Joe, 'I'm going to die if I don't eat at least five meals a day'." Frank looks at his brother as he teases him.
Joe raises his hands in self defense, "hey I'm a growing boy what can I say."
"If you keep eating like that you will grow into something alright. Well, if I remember correctly we passed a Waffle House when we came from the hotel, how dose that sound?" asks Frank as he makes his way through traffic.
Joe turns to face his brother "um Frank, what exactly is a Waffle House?"
Frank spares a glance at Joe before returning his attention to the road. "I believe it's a 24 hour chain restaurant in the south that serves breakfast all day. I was thinking we might want to give it a try."
"Sounds good to me," says Joe as he leans back in his seat.
