here's another bad oneshot. i was thinking about how sam and freddie's relationship would have played out, and i realized that they probably wouldn't end up together. it's a realist story.

In the end, he moved to California to go to Stanford and she stayed in Seattle and ditched the idea of going to college.

She didn't ask him to stay, so he left.

.

A week before he moved to Stanford, they stood on the fire escape, letting the summer heat fade off into the sunset.

Her nails were painted red and he stared at them as she tapped the railing and refused to look at him.

"What are you thinking," he said, holding back the urge to put his arms around her. She looked sideways to see him in her peripheral vision.

"I'm not going to say goodbye," she states. She turned fully towards him and looked him in the eye. All those years of teasing him really seemed wasted now that she looked back on them. He brought a hand up to her face and tucked a piece of blonde hair behind her ear.

"I know."

Freddie knew Sam didn't like things she wasn't good at. Goodbyes were one them.

.

He never really got used to not hearing her voice, but eventually he had to stop calling.

.

Their senior year of high school, he found himself at a party, surrounded by too-drunk teenagers and loud music deafening his ears. He didn't know what he was doing there, but he saw a flash of curly blonde hair turn the corner and he decided not to go home.

Sam was smashed, but Freddie had expected that. She giggled and kept yelling at him to have fun, dance, let loose. He settled for watching her dance instead.

.

The day before he left, she found herself in his room, tracing circles on his bare shoulders. He started to whisper something, but found his mouth covered in hers and skin touching skin and he forgot what he was going to say.

She was gone in the morning.

.

Somewhere between spring break and graduation, Freddie asked her where they stood.

Just like the history test they had the next day, Sam wasn't prepared for it.

She kissed him and he shut up.

.

It was the middle of the night and Sam wanted to do 'Wake Up Spencer' for old times' sake. So Freddie brings his camera and Sam is carrying a bowl of meatballs when they meet in the hallway.

Really they just ended up kissing on the fire escape, letting hands roam too far and emotions spill out like it was just for one night.

And it was, but it wasn't. Because it kept happening, but they never told anyone about it.

.

It's Freddie's first time back home since he left, and everything seems too normal. Sam is at the fridge when he lets himself into the loft and Carly is sitting on the couch watching Girly Cow and Spencer is making a sculpture that doesn't seem to resemble anything. And it all seems so normal, except Carly and Spencer hug him, and Sam doesn't even look at him.

.

In the end he goes back to Stanford and she stays in Seattle.

She never asks him to stay, or even talks to him at all, so he leaves.

.

She never said goodbye, but it was implied.
