All Harry wanted was to see Severus smile.

A real smile.

Not the pained and forced half-smile that he gave every so often;

He wanted to make Snape grin like there was no tomorrow

And no yesterday.

Even with the tender kisses and whispered sentiments in the night, he never smiled…

Not once.

Not even after Harry had whispered the three words he'd been holding in for so long.

All Severus had done was say, "I know".

No smile.

Not even a smirk.

Harry was left with nothing.

He knew it wasn't because Severus didn't love him.

The man just had too much pain to smile.

After all, who smiles when they're in pain, right?

Harry wanted to see Severus smile because that would mean that the pain didn't hurt so much anymore;

That Harry had dulled it somehow;

And that would be…so wonderful.

It would be the greatest high

One that Harry wouldn't come down from,

But Severus didn't smile.

Severus never smiled.

Snape never smiled.

No matter how much Harry wanted or wished for it to be different,

The pain was just too much.

Harry wasn't surprised at this, really.

He was a part of the pain.

At least… his father was.

Then there was Voldemort,

And even Voldemort's name was pain.

What was worse was the blood.

Snape was convinced that his hands were bloody

And that the blood would never wash off--

Not ever.

No matter how many times he washed them,

Or how hard he scrubbed,

The blood would always be there.

Sometimes, Severus refused to touch him.

Harry knew it was only because Severus thought he was pure

And that the blood would stain him

Forever.

Doomed to be impure

Forever…

Like him,

But Harry knew it wouldn't

Because Harry knew that he wasn't pure.

He never had been.

Harry knew that the stain on him couldn't wash off any more than the one on Severus could.

But Severus couldn't see Harry's stain,

So he thought he was perfect;

Unblemished;

Pure.

Yet, that wasn't the case,

So Harry wanted to see Severus smile

Because it was nearly the only thing left in this world with any meaning.

This world was so torn and so broken and so…

Dark,

That there was nothing of value left;

Nothing but Severus's smile.
