Rolf was not a cruel person. He loved Lisel and was trying to warn her of the dangers that were in the way. Yes he acted like the enemy but he had done that to keep his love out of harms way. She was everything to him. She was his heart. He was only 17 going on 18 but he promised he would take care of her. It was a promise he would keep. It meant losing her. It meant making her cry. It meant hurting her. He could still see her tears. He could still hear her cry. He knew he had to do it. He had to make sure it was done. There was no way to fake it till you make it. There was no way to change what had to be. Maybe one day they would be able to be together but probably not. A single tear rolled down his eye. He had written her a note and pinned it in her dress.

Dear Lisel

I love you. I'm sorry that I had to hurt you but I did have to do it. I had to do it in order to save you. I know you've been hurt before and you got better from it. Please find the strength to get better from this. Always remember that I love you Rolf

Was it worth it to get her to safety? Yes. But it was painful. He would never see her again. It would be putting her in grave danger to do so. He was basically living in hell so that she could live eventually in heaven. There was no way he was the best of the best. If he were he would never have hurt her. He would not have had to. But he was giving himself for her. He just prayed it wouldn't be too late.
