Kokoni anata no tameni (meaning "Here for you")

My first go at a McKate fic. Starts about an hour from the end of Witness (2x14)

McGee sat at his desk, reading over the letter for what seemed to be the millionth time. Taking a deep breathe, he closed his eyes and tried to forget all about the last couple of days.

Opening his eyes, he came back to reality. He knew he was going to be having nightmares.

Kate sat at her desk, watching McGee. Tony left about an hour ago, followed quickly by Gibbs, but where he went was a mystery.

Kate really did feel bad for McGee. He had gone through so much in the past few days, finding someone then losing them. She had no idea how she would be able to cope with it.

She stood up and walked over to McGee after she saw him open his eyes.

McGee looked up as Kate came and stood in front of his desk. To be honest, he had no idea there was anyone left in the bullpen.

She just stood there for a moment, watching him. McGee looked back at her, and she saw the pain and sadness reflected in his eyes.

"Tim…" Kate used the same tone she had when she brought him a coffee after the… incident.

"Kate," McGee said, making her stop. Kate just looked at him, waiting for him to continue "I know what you're going to say. I know it's not my fault, but I can't help but think, if I was there, I could have…" McGee trailed off, leaving the sentence hanging.

"Tim" Kate said again, firmly, getting him to look up at her "You're right, it is not your fault, and there was nothing, absolutely nothing you could do. But, what I was going to say was, whether you wanted to talk about it?"

McGee looked down, shaking his head.

"I don't think I'm ready for that yet" He muttered.

Kate stood there for another moment, taking in his appearance. He hadn't changed his clothes since that night. She doubted whether he has had anything decent to eat or been home yet.

"Well, then, how about I shout you some dinner. It looks like you need it"

McGee looked up to her prepared to decline, but her stubborn stance made him give in. He nodded his head.

"Good, I'll get my stuff and we can go. Any preferences where we go?" Kate said walking over to her desk. When he didn't reply, she turned around to find him fixated on the letter lying on his desk.

Closing her computer and picking up her bag, Kate walking over to his desk again.

"Tim, I'm here for you" Kate said, almost as a whisper. "Now come on, the night's not getting any younger" Kate said, waiting for him to get up.

McGee sighed and picked up the letter, putting it in his top draw, making sure it wasn't bent. He got put and grabbed his jacket. Kate smiled at him and started walking towards the elevator. He knew he would eventually get through this. Especially since he had the best friends a guy could ask for.

They stepped into the elevator and as the doors were closing, Kate reached over a grabbed his hand. Kate turned around and smiled at him, and this time he smiled back, as he squeezed her hand.
