Disclaimer: I am not Harper Lee. I never will be. I wish I could write like her, though; her skills are far more than my own. :'(
"Remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." That was the only time I ever heard Atticus say it was a sin to do something, and I asked Miss Maudie about it.
"Your father's right," she said. "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy . . . but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
Right away I could never understand why Atticus never turned Boo in for a trial for killing Bob Ewell. He was a lawyer; the law was his job, so why wasn't he doing it? Why was he protecting Boo? Maybe Jem was the first thing on his mind right then. No, he wasn't the kind of man to lose his rationality over something. Plus, he was thinking about it, but Mr. Tate convinced him not to hold a trial, but why was Atticus swayed into it? I thought it over until it clicked. What had Boo ever done to Atticus, hell, he was why me and Jem were alive. After all, Atticus always said it was a sin to kill a mockingbird.
