Chapter 1
I looked at myself in the window of the bus. My father caught my eye and I punished myself for looking. I was Abnegation for Gods sake. I needed to be selfless. Even the slightest mess up could get you factionless. Until now. Today was the day I got to be selfish, if I wanted. Today was the day us initiates chose the faction we would be in for the rest of our lives. Unless we wound up factionless. I glanced at my younger sister, Beatrice. She looked as calm as ever, but I could tell she was more nervous then I was.
The bus stopped. We all climbed out and stared up at the tall building where we all went to school. The Sears tower. We went inside and found the stairs. Since we were Abnegation, we almost never take the elevator, since it was considered "selfish" and "not needed". We climbed up twenty flights of stairs. My feet and legs throbbed, and I was out of breath. We went into the main room where all the initiates were lined up in their factions in alphabetical order. There were five giant bowls with elements in them. A man called Marcus would offer us a knife when he called our name. We would slit our skin and spill our blood into the bowl of our choice. My sister and I got into line with all the others. They called out the first few names but I can barely hear. James Tucker, a boy from Dauntless is the first name I hear. He stepped up to the bowl and took the knife from Marcus's hand. He slit his skin and the blood fell into the bowl filled with glass. Candor. The first transfer. One by one, the initiates walk up and spill their blood. Transfers and non-transfers, there is a lot of muttering. "Caleb Prior." My turn. I walk up to the stage and take the knife. I brace myself and cut my skin. The pain sears through my hand. I am Abnegation. I have to be. Not this time. I shift my hand to the Erudite bowl and let my blood drop in it.
