She can't be bothered to notice him. She's too caught up in first impressions and petty grudges to notice how he's changed, how he's changed for her.

She's too tired and stressed to notice that she's breaking his heart with her cold words and indifference.

Some nights, James dreams of her looking at him the way he's always wished he would and he knows that she knows that he's changed since 5th yeah and he smiles and she smiles and his heart aches a little less. Then he wakes up and realizes that his dream is just that − a dream. He considers crying because it felt so real and he know that when he sees her, she'll look at him with her usual contempt, never bothering to notice how his eyes have lost their spark.

I f Sirius catches him crying, Evans is dead. He's fed up with her indifference towards James because he's losing his best mate to a selfish girl who can't be bothered to care. Sirius knows –as does the rest of Hogwarts− that Evans is breaking his best mate. He hates her with every fiber in his being because she is callous and cruel and lacks compassion for the one person who needs it from her the most.

Subconsciously, she notices that his eyes have lost their sparkle, that his laughter sounds fake and forced and that she shudders every time she hears that laugh because she cares (not because she's disgusted with him, as she believes). Inwardly, her heart stutters whenever he wins a Quidditch match because he's so happy and she so happy that he's happy. She can't admit these things to herself or him because then she would have to admit that she was wrong and her pride wouldn't be able to take the blow.

He's growing increasingly desperate; Hogwarts is almost over and she still won't acknowledge that he's changed. He doesn't know what to do anymore. He's Head Boy, he doesn't prank people like he used to (even then, it was only a ploy to get her to notice him) and he tries his best to be serious because according to Lily, they were at war and how dare he smile when people were dying. He tells her he loves her and she scoffs and calls him pathetic. As their 7th year slowly draws to a close, thinking about life without her in it seems like a fate worse than death.

To her, this is still a game. She doesn't have the common sense to realize that a boy doesn't put his heart and dignity on the line for three years straight for a girl who can't even be bothered to notice him for nothing.

He's broken and she's broken and one day they'll fix each other but until then it's icy glares and longing stares.

A/N: Hmm, I didn't mean to make Lily seem like such a bitch, it just came out that way. Ah well, she's still my favorite character. My first fanfic in a while so constructive criticism is welcome.
