Castiel had seen many things, but watching Dean sleep was something he found.. Special. The Winchester was fierce, coarse, so many words applied to him, but they all meant the same thing in the end. Dean Winchester was a killer, a fighter, a survivor, a damaged person with faults and sharp edges that would not hesitate to destroy and kill.
But Dean was still a good man, for all his faults, for all his alcohol, and sins, he protected his brother, he helped people, he even saved the world. Dean was as, perhaps even more so, battle hardened than any angel Castiel knew. Dean was strong, harsh, a warrior.
And yet, in his sleep, he looked peaceful, content almost, like any other human, but it was special with Dean. So special because even with that sleepy happiness on the hunter's relaxed face Castiel knew better. He knew how angry the hunter was, how many Dean had killed, how horrible and wonderful Dean was.
But he still looked so completely content asleep that Castiel, still after seeing him like this so many times, was surprised Dean was capable of being happy at all. How did all the blood, and tears, and pain fail to taint him? Hell had managed to touch him somewhat, but Castiel could keep Hell at bay for Dean. It wasn't hard, and he didn't tell the hunter of how he prevented Hell from haunting Dean's sleep. Did it matter? As long as Dean continue to look so content in his sleep.. Castiel was content as well.
Castiel almost sighed, the contrast of seeing Dean asleep and awake was amazing, but he could see the sun creeping up into the sky, it's light streaming into the motel room. Soon Dean would wake, and then he would go knock on Sam's door and Gabriel would leave before Dean went in and saw him and Sam. Like everyday.
But Castiel did not sigh as Dean's eye slowly blinked, the hunter scowled, looking up at Castiel. "God, how long have you been standing there Cas?"
"Longer than you would have liked." Castiel gestured to the nightstand. "I did however bring pie."
Dean grinned. "Knew you loved me." And dug into the pie like he was going to die afterwards, which was always a possibility with the Winchesters. Castiel almost smiled, he supposed he did love Dean.
Gabriel claimed he did, then again Gabriel had some strange idea that if Dean and Castiel became a couple Dean would be more open to... Sabriel as Castiel's Trickster brother called it. It was an intriguing notion.
R and R!
