It had taken Hiccup many laborous months to perfect it, but it was ready at last. The village was going to appreciate this one. Now, to test it out.
Toothless was already in the room, so Hiccup slipped the medallion over his best friend's neck. It was made of metal from the distant Isle of Midhalla, metal that was blessed by the gods, and glowed for a few seconds. Then a voice came out of it.
"Is it working?"
"Yes!" cried Hiccup. "It works! Toothless, buddy, the Dragon Translator Amulet Works!"
"Yes!" cried the amulet, or rather Toothless through the amulet.
"Let's go tell the village!" cried Hiccup. "Come on, bud!"
"Can we get some fish, first?" asked Toothless, hopefully. Hiccup laughed and said, "Sure, why not?"
And so the two flew off to get some fish. After that they gathered the village, and told the Vikings and Dragons about the new Dragon Translator Amulet.
"So if we had some for our dragons, we'd be able to understand them too?" asked Gobber in surprise.
"That's right," replied Toothless. Everyone immediately asked Hiccup to make some more. And Hiccup said he would have to go get some more god-blessed metal from the Isle of Midhalla to make them. So Stoik told him and Toothless to go get it.
It would take several weeks to get to the Isle of Midhalla, so Toothless and Hiccup packed for the trip. Then they flew off.
They flew all day, and then all night, and then all day some more before they came to an island to rest. They slept all the second night, and all the third day. And in the evening of the third sunset... That's when it happened.
The attack.
Alvin the Treacherous and his Outcasts had been tracking Hiccup and Toothless ever since the first night. And now they had found them.
They charged yelling and screaming, which woke the two friends up. Alarmed, Toothless didn't even wait for Hiccup to get on him. He grabbed Hiccup and took off, dodgeing the arrows and nets that were fired at them. They flew three hours before Toothless smelled the blood coming from Hiccup. He landed on another island, and set Hiccup down.
Then, they saw the dagger in Hiccup's hip. Hiccup and Toothless had been so frightened by the warning-less attack that Hiccup hadn't felt it and Toothless hadn't smelled the blood until now. Now Hiccup cried out in pain.
"Hiccup!" cried Toothless. "Hiccup, stay calm. I'm gonna pull the dagger out!"
Hiccup struggled to stay quiet as Toothless gripped the dagger in his teeth and pulled it out. But the pain was much worse when it was out, and the young Viking screamed in terrible agony.
"Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!" he screamed. "Make it stop! Please make it stop!"
Toothless couldn't bear it when Hiccup was in this much pain. He comforted him as best as he could, and licked the wound, trying to heal it with his saliva. Finally the healing power of the Night Fury's saliva took over, and Hiccup's hip went numb.
Exhausted and worn out, Hiccup closed his eyes and lay his head down. The longer Toothless saw him in this state, the angrier the dragon became.
Finally he roared to the skies, "Alvin! You will PAY!"
