"David," Jean said as she greeted her husband at the door with a kiss. It was her day-off from the office and she knew how stressful it was when he was the only one on call.

He held her at arms-length, marvelling at how beautiful she was. Her soft brown curls which framed her small face and her cute button nose, those soft brown eyes that conveyed all the love she felt for him. He was reminded of the first day he met her at dentist college, a mad bundle of frizzy brown hair which crashed into his chest, mumbling a hasty apology. She was one of the best accidents of his life.

"Hello, dear. How was your day?" he asked before he noticed the look on her face. He had seen this look enough times to know that something was worrying his wife. Jean Granger was a strong woman who could handle herself and anything that came her way, so if something was bothering her that she couldn't fix, then it must be really important.

Jean nibbled on her lip thoughtfully. There had been an... incident today while she had spent the day at home and she wasn't sure how her husband would react. She had hoped maybe to wait until he was settled and relaxed, but now it seemed like the time had come.

"Well, today..." she started but then there was scream from behind her. Little footsteps raced quickly towards them before a pair of arms found themselves around David's knees. He looked down at his darling daughter beaming up at him with the widest smile a five-year-old could muster. Most people said she was the perfect mix of the two of them, but David could only see a baby Jean when he looked at his little girl.

He dropped his briefcase to the floor, his attention drawn away from his wife's pursed lips, and picked up his daughter. "Hello kitten, how was your day?"

"Daddy! Daddy!" she screamed excitedly as she threw her arms around his neck and placed a sloppy kiss on his cheek. "I was a fairy princess today."

He looked at her, taking in her pretty pink dress and her pink plastic star wand. "I can see that, kitten. So what happened in Hermione Land today?"

"Well, in Granger Kingdom, Princess Hermione defeated a terrible dragon," she said in a matter-of-fact tone.

David grinned, "Sorry, Granger Kingdom. My mistake. Was it a fire-breathing dragon?"

Hermione nodded fervently, "Yes, everything was on fire, the bed, the curtains, the mirror, but then Princess Hermione saved the day."

He kissed her and threw her up in the air, "All hail Princess Hermione!"

She giggled and then wiggled out of his arms to stand on the floor. "Come let me show you," she said, clutching his hand as she pulled him towards her room.

The parents followed their darling daughter's quick steps, the worried look never leaving her mother's face, before they came to their daughter's bedroom. Hermione pushed open the door and then shouted excitedly, "Look daddy!"

David didn't know what he was expecting but never this. Every piece of furniture was charred black, perfectly matching the dark scorch marks on the floor and walls. The curtain and bedspread were in tatters and the soft pink rug at the foot of her once-pink princess bed had large, black-rimmed holes.

He turned to his wife and asked, "What happened here?"

His wife shook her head and said slowly, "Everything was on fire, the bed, the curtains, the mirror,..."

Then Hermione threw in with a wide smile, her star wand extended as she twirled in a circle, "Then Princess Hermione saved the day!"
