Title: Promise of Things to Come

Author: Gabrielle Day

Disclaimer: D.N.Angel and its characters do not belong to me. Bah.

Warnings: Minor spoilers for one episode of the anime.

Notes: I wrote this ficlet in class one day, so it's basically a piece of fluff, and I'll admit that. This is based on an episode of the anime, which differs from the manga. I wrote it as a bit of an exercise, too, to un-rust my poor brain and get writing again. So I hope you enjoy!

Promise of Things to Come

"So they really don't remember?" Daisuke asked.

"No. Your memories may have been changed, too, Daisuke." Dark answered.

"That's okay, as long as it helps people!"

Dark smiled inwardly at his tamer's response. It was like Daisuke not to care about himself as long as other people were happy and safe. So he wouldn't remember the glimpse of his future. Daisuke would not remember, but Dark would.

Dark had seen a glimpse of his own future in the determined hazel eyes, the familiar unruly red hair, and (eventual) willingness to help another person, in that child. Of Daisuke's son, the next in line for the Niwa destiny.

Each Niwa had been different, but none had been quite like Daisuke. Whereas Daisuke's grandfather Daichii had been instantly confident and powerful, Daisuke was unsure and his power was different. Daisuke's power stemmed from a kindness Dark had not experienced before in his long life.

To Daichii he had been a partner. To Daisuke he was a protector. He didn't especially mind the change.

Daisuke hummed softly to himself as they headed home. Dark rolled his eyes, but continued to smile. One day, Daisuke would stop being oblivious and find his true holy maiden, as all the Niwas had as destiny dictated. But Daisuke would raise his son with his special brand of kindness, and Harada's special kind of determination.

Dark knew his future rested in good hands.
