Regret
I don't own Peter Pan or Wendy.
The window looked dark and cold now, no longer the door to her magical world that washed away worries and troubles. How could she have left? Why? She buried her head in her arms as she sat on the window sill and stared at the stars. She searched, she searched for the brightest star that shone o show the way to her paradise, but the star had long since died for her, blinking out as she grew.
Her life had been shattered, burned along with everything around her in the fire. Her house, her home, even her family was destroyed. She was left alone, in the ashes, by some cruel miracle she was saved. She was the only survivor.
Now that she knew where she belonged she could no longer return to the place her heard resided. She was stuck, her heart and mind in that world, her body in this one. She was trapped in a place in-between, so sorrowful that she did not belong in one place nor another.
Her spirit was straining to get away, to fly, but it was caught in one little corner of her body, like HIS shadow in the window. She needed to leave, but she could not. Her heart had already departed and was waiting for her, waiting for her spirit to join it.
"Wendy!" a girl cried, walking into the room. "Do get away from the window!"
Wendy stood to climb back into the cold, chilly room. She stood for a moment, on the edge of the window, looking in at the little girl that resided, standing on the creaking wooden floors. She began to take the step to bring her inside.
Her foot slipped.
The girl screamed.
Wend felt nothing. She felt no pain, no suffering, only the light release of the little corner that was trapped in her body. She felt herself float, for the first time in too many years.
Nearby, a newborn baby laughed.
"Hello. I'm Wendy. What's your name?"
The fairy looked puzzled for a minute and stared back up at the now-13 year old girl.
"I don't know. I don't have one."
"Will you be my fairy?"
The fairy looked at her and smiled.
"Alright."
Both turned toward a star, the brightest star, that shone once again in the night sky.
"Where are we going? What do we do now?"
Wendy laughed and took the fairy's tiny had in her own and pointed toward the star.
"We're going to Neverland."
