THE BIG DAY

Cristina sat back into the hard wood chair.

The sun shone in from the side window and the room had the scent of sandalwood. It was a pretty room, suitable for the occasion she guessed, but she other things on her mind.

Cristina got up quickly deciding a walk around the tiny room would clear her head.

This is it, Cristina thought to herself, slowly trying to wrap her head around the situation. From this moment she would be a different person. He told her that nothing would change, but it had. It took her a long time to prepare herself for it. She wondered if she would be strong enough to get through it.

It had been a tough year, with Burke's rehab and the end of her internship. But there was so much to look forward to, although it was all a bit daunting.

She remembered the Chief's face when her and Burke had broken the news, she hadn't wanted to tell him, but again Burke did what he did best and pushed her a little harder. Burke didn't have to push nearly as hard when it came to telling Bailey.

Bailey, since that moment, had become a great help in preparations, and in settling Cristina's mind. Cristina wasn't usually a worrier, but this situation could play with anyone's head.

Hearing a knock on the door and seeing no one enter, Cristina impatiently yelled for the person to come in.

"They're ready for you", Meredith poked her head around the door. "You look beautiful", she continued but stopped after seeing the look on Cristina's face.

"Come on", Cristina rose quickly from her seat; "Let's get this over with".

Before making it out the door, Cristina ran into George, who was breathing heavily as if he had been told to run.

"Dr. Burke said I have to check on you", George grabbed the doorframe, trying to catch his breath.

"You can tell Dr. Burke, that im still here and I'll see him in a minute", Cristina looked a George who continued to stand in front of her, "well…go"

George ran, looking back over his shoulder, "You look nice", he shouted before turning the corner.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever", Cristina turned back to Meredith, "Where is Izzie, and Dr. Bailey?"

Meredith looked around the halls, "I'm not sure, I bet they are just outside waiting with the rest of them".

Meredith caught a glimpse of worry in her friends face, and quickly started walking her towards the two large doors. "Look everything is alright", she continued, "Dr. Bailey and Izzie are in the front row waiting and watching, ok".

"Ok", Cristina answered mechanically, as Meredith pushed open the door and walked slowly towards the sound of the Pianola.

Cristina caught a glimpse of Burke, standing proudly, and looking at her with that smile on his face, the one that made her go weak at the knees.

Cristina all of a sudden felt a flutter in her stomach, but she wasn't going to let it get to her. This was Burke's day, and hers as well.

She tried to shake the feelings out of her head as she noticed Meredith trying to gesture at her subtly. Cristina went to move her foot to start walking but she couldn't. It was as if it was glued to the floor.

Not knowing what to do, Cristina stared at the carpet, willing herself to move. She loved him that was all that mattered. He wanted that piece of paper, that commitment.

Slowly rising her head, her eyes met Burke's who was silently looking at her. The smile had gone and a look of fear and worry had replaced it.

She smiled faintly, straightened her bouquet and started walking. A sigh of relief washed over family and friends, who had come to watch Preston Burke, the smart, kind, musical Cardio-Thoracic surgeon marry Cristina Yang, the strong, passionate, messy intern.
