I dislike writing disclaimers, and anyway, nothing is mine.
First Impressions
Marcelin Enjolras was an old man, in his 70s. He looked like my grandfather - tall and lean, with thinning wiry white hair. He was a professor, in a college, and God only knows what he taught, although it might have been history. He struck me that way. He was calm and collected, and he was leading his students in a revolt for freedom. I wasn't sure from what. He had a strong clear voice, and I liked and trusted him from the first moment.
Francois Grantaire was in his 50s, cynical, with a good sense of humor. He laughed easily. He wasn't involved in the college, but he still hung around. He had jet-black hair and wore a dark green greatcoat most of the time. He liked to be helpful to Enjolras, if only by giving his support in words. He was pretty much unemployed. His somewhat harsh voice made me think he might be having troubles in life, but I was still fond of him.
Eponine Thénardier and Marius Pontmercy were in love. At least, only Eponine was to begin with, and then Marius loved her back. I didn't think much on their looks. Eponine must have been oriental, anyway her voice made me think so. She was probably about 18. Marius wasn't much older, 20 maybe, and a romantic. He had to be, with his voice.
Cosette? Marius' first love, I believed. I didn't pay much attention to her. She was Fantine and Valjean's daughter. Even if Marius ended up loving someone else, she was still happy. I think she liked one of the other students. A soprano, she didn't strike me as having much character
Jean Valjean and Fantine were married, but Fantine died of a disease soon after giving birth to Cosette. Valjean, who had just got out of prison, took his daughter out of the country because he didn't want her to grow up in the place Fantine died in. The memories hurt him. He had a rough voice with a strange accent that suggested he might be from England, perhaps... I was immediately attracted to it. Fantine had a beautiful voice, and I thought maybe Valjean had married her soon after she had been abandoned by a lover.
Phillipe Javert... Valjean had done something, I didn't know what, and Javert wanted to arrest him for it. Javert was upsetting. I didn't like him. I thought perhaps he was evil. He committed suicide...I couldn't understand why. Valjean had saved his life, and it wrecked his balance. He had a wonderful tone though, a voice that I really loved
The Thénardiers were...very creepy. Madame Thénardier was skinny and had greasy blond hair and a voice bordering on hysterics. I didn't think she liked her husband at all. Thénardier was fat and unshaven, with a grating voice that scared me, especially when he was robbing corpses. I was almost terrified of him then. An innkeeper, obviously, but a rather disturbed one. Madame Thénardier hated her daughter Eponine and threw her out on the streets at a young age.
Gavroche was young, and cheeky, and an orphan gamin. He was probably about 9 years old. I adored him for awhile, with his clear, loud voice.
They made up my cast. It wasn't before a time had passed that I learned the truth about them, who they are. But I never really forgot my first impressions on Les Miserables. Besides, I will always love my first Enjolras, who was so very much like my beloved grandfather.
Yes, this is really what I thought all the characters were the first time I heard the soundtrack with no knowledge of the plot at all. Enjolras, by the way, also wore a toga *grin* Now you know what my twisted imagination can come up with.
