Dear Diary,
Today was very fun. I am now ten years old. That means that I'm a whole year older! I had my birthday party. It was very fun. All of mother and father's friends came. I knew almost everybody there. I got lots of presents. Everybody gave me something good. They knew that if they didn't I would get them back for it. They know I'll do it too. My uncle gave me this journal. He told me to write things in it. He told me something else too. I didn't like it. He told me that I had to hate all the Montagues.
I already knew that. I'm not stupid! I just don't think I understand it. I mean, I know that everybody avoids them. Either that or they fight with them. On the streets, they always argue with them. I remember once when they actually killed some of our men. I think we killed some of their men too. If we both are killing each other, then why are we better than they are? It seems that we are both being mean.
I wonder why we have to hate them. I don't remember them ever doing anything to us. I asked Uncle Montague about it, and he looked very surprised. He said it was because of some very important affairs that I would not understand. I think he lied. I don't think he remembers.
I guess it doesn't really matter. If my family tells me to do something, I have to do it. I'm just mad because I don't think they want me to play with Romeo anymore. Of course, they don't know I play with Romeo. Father would certainly thrash me hard if he knew! We just play in secret, in alleys. We have a secret club. We call it 'The Contenders'. Isn't that a good name? I'm not sure what it means, but everyone says it a lot. It sounds very important.
Tomorrow I will tell Romeo that I can't be part of the club anymore. I hope he doesn't ask me why. I'm not sure what I'll say. Maybe I'll just say it's because he's a Montague, and all Montagues are evil. I'm sure he'll understand. And if he doesn't, I don't care! I never liked him much anyway! If all the Capulets hate the Montagues so much, it must be for a really good reason! Otherwise, why would we fight for so long? Boy, it sure feels good to get this down on paper. I guess I'm as much of a Capulet as any of my uncle's men! Maybe I'll even fight with a Montague one day! Wouldn't that be neat? Maybe I'll even fight with Romeo! What a fun game that would be! It'll be just like playing Hero's and Villains! Of course, I'll be the hero.
