Life Sometimes Equals Hell
A great flash of flames appeared in and illuminated the Hokage's Office in the dead of the night. Sarutobi in response...did nothing.
The flames burned for a few more seconds before dieing out and revealing a figure that quickly sat down in the seat behind him and let his features be hidden by the newly replenished shadows. And waited.
Sarutobi briefly looked at the clock on his wall, 'Midnight. Sixteen hours late. He's worse than Kakashi.' Then continued on with his paperwork.
Things remained this way for at least 30 minutes with neither talking and the only movement being breathing and paperwork being finished.
The figure idly sat not caring. He had nothing better to do. And also knew this was both a petty attempt at revenge and a test to estimate his patience.
This continued for what seemed like thirty minutes before Sarutobi sighed and looked at the figure.
"God damn you." Sarutobi the the sense that the figure was giving a cheeky smile and continued in a lighter more grandfatherly tone. "So, you made it to the chunin exam finals? Like I said earlier, congratulations."
"Of course. Considering everything about me its not that surprising. Chances are I would of passed it even if I didn't have chakra. Besides, nobody there would even stand a chance against me." The voice, which sounded absurdly young, said.
"Good, good. And your completely right. It seems to me the academy standards have fallen. Those gennin are lazy, loud, overconfident, anti-social, shy, greedy, and at the very worst, fangirls. I also noticed that the non-clan ninja...what's her name?"
"Sakura"
"Ah, very good. She's the only ninja that used the basic academy three. But those were the only things she used. Most likely because she.."
"Cut the crap old man." The figure said, suddenly annoyed. "We both know that the reason you called me here wasn't to congratulate me on something I could do sleep-walking."
Sarutobi responded by putting away his grandfatherly personality and proceeded to be more serious. He briefly contemplated on another more delicate way to say the news. 'No, right now, he doesn't deserve gentle.'
"The Eight are coming to Konoha to 'visit' during the finals."
The slight tension in the air disappeared. Sarutobi got the distinct impression that his friend had suffered a heart attack. Which was disproved when the figure got up and walked towards the hokage's desk.
"Why? They avoid Konoha like a germaphobic would a town with the plague." The voice was measured, and it seemed emotionless. But the Hokage had known this figure for years and could decipher even his most difficult habits. And so to him, he heard a voice shouting with a tone of subtle anger as well as bit of betrayal.
Sarutobi bowed his head. "The message came from their 'mangers'. It said that they were visiting for them to watch a chuunin exam. Officially of course. I've already had our spies look for the unofficial version."
The figure nodded. Then something changed about him and where once stood a total enigma now stood a concerned and slightly scared boy. "There's no way somebody can rig the tournament, right? Keep, say, me from becoming a chunin?"
Sarutobi put on a smile. "Of course not. It'll take more than a group of civilians to keep me from promoting one of the most powerful ninja konoha's ever see."
The figure also smiled. "Thanks Jii." And with that the figure was again engulfed with flames, and when said flames dispersed, not a trace remained of the figures presence in the room, not even ash.
