Albus Severus Potter ran an impatient hand through his unruly black hair. His blinked his green eyes rapidly. He stared at his reflection and wished he were different.
Stupid James had been messing around with their mum's old school trunk again. He found a silly Valentine poem that she'd once had a dwarf perform for his dad.
His eyes are as green as a fresh pickled toad,
His hair is as dark as a blackboard.
I wish he was mine, he's truly divine,
The hero who conquered the Dark Lord.
Albus gazed into those emerald eyes. They'd never felt like they belonged to him. All his life he'd been told he had his father's green eyes. His grandmother's green eyes.
He yanked at the mop of hair atop his head. The same color as his father and his father before him.
For years, he'd been regaled with the adventures and heroics of his family. They'd been so brave and noble.
Albus felt unworthy to be part of that family. He wasn't brave or noble. He wasn't any good at magic - most people at Hogwarts teased him for being the Slytherin Squib.
He felt judged by the green eyes that stared back at him in the mirror.
Futilely, he rubbed the heels of his palms into his eyes; praying that they'd change. He'd never been so envious of Teddy. He could choose to look however he wanted; to stand out, to pay homage, to blend in, to fade away.
When he felt his eyes begin to tear from the furious friction, Albus pulled his hands away.
The alien eyes, as green as a fresh pickled toad, stared back at him. Defining who he was supposed to be; who he failed to be.
Once again, Albus wished he were different.
