October 31st, 1989

Kenshin set a pot of water boiling on the electric stove-top.

"Pink?" his wife asked, padding into the kitchen.

"Mmhm," he said, chopping vegetables.

"But, why is your shirt pink?"

"This was the only Japanese costume they had left in my size, Kaoru."

"It's not authentic, though. I thought you wanted us to 'share our culture' this Halloween. Men didn't wear pink shirts back then..."

"It isn't a shirt," he said, "it's a gi."

"Of course," she said, reaching around him to snatch a snow pea.

"Where's Kenji?"

"Out. He and his friends wanted to get an early start trick-or-treating."

"But what about dinner?"

"He had a Hot Pocket."

Kenshin sighed, looking at the healthy rice, vegetables, and tofu he was making. Why did he bother? "What's he going as?"

She mumbled.

"Hm? I didn't catch that."

"I said, a 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.'"

He frowned. "He didn't like my idea, then?"

"Well, it is a Ninja turtle, honey."

"He thinks it's Japanese just because it has the word 'Ninja' in it?" That was depressing. "This is what we get for having him schooled here in the U.S."

"We can always send him to visit grandma and grandpa in Kyoto," she said, slipping her arms around his waist and kissing the tender spot just below his ear. "Think of all the time we'd have to ourselves," she whispered.

"Mmm," he agreed, turning to kiss her.

"You know, this pink gi... " she murmured, playing with his collar.

"Yes?"

"It looks strangely good on you."

A/N: Happy Halloween!

A/N2: I got tired of modern RK fics being so generic. I wanted to write something specific to a freaky little period of our recent history. I chose 1989.

Hot Pockets - one of the many microwavable products that came out in the 80s. Basically a breaded pocket that holds different foods inside such as ham and cheese, cheese and brocolli, pizza, etc.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles -- If you haven't seen these sewer-dwelling "heroes in a half-shell" firsthand, consider yourself lucky. It was a very popular cartoon for awhile. They had their own line of cookies, and bedclothes, and Hostess "Sewer Pies" with frosted green shells and disturbing vanilla goo inside.

Yuck.
