Observe, a Christmas fic. One shot, Ryou POV. I don't own Yugioh. Enjoy.

STARS

The window was steaming up from where I kept breathing on it. It was annoying because I had to keep rubbing the window so I could see. There was snow all along the outside ledge as well, and that just obstructed my view even more. And it was dark outside. I didn't like winter for that reason. I liked daylight, and in winter daylight tended to end at four in the afternoon. I was sitting there at six in the evening, so most of what I could see was dark. There were a couple of streetlights outside, but they weren't doing a very good job of lighting things up. I could see the snow falling in the light they were giving off. It almost looked like rain.

And I could see the houses on the other side of the street. They all had the lights on inside, and they looked all warm and cosy and happy. In one house I could see a family of at least six sitting around a big table eating their dinner. They were smiling and laughing, and they had a big Christmas tree in the corner. It was really pretty. It had colourful lights and sparkly decorations. And they had tinsel around bits of the room.

I turned to observe my own tree. It was a geranium in comparison. Not nearly as big as the one across the street, and not nearly as nicely decorated. But I had tried. It had plain lights that weren't very evenly distributed, and mismatched decorations. The angel at the top was wonky too, even though I had tried so hard to make her upright. She just wouldn't stay. I didn't have any tinsel up, either. I thought that, if it wasn't put up really well, then it looked tacky. And when I saw the state of my tree when I had finished with it, I didn't dare try putting up any tinsel.

Apart from the tree, my living room was very plain. It didn't look any different to how it looked during the rest of the year. Unlike the house across the street, it was warm without being cosy. Cosy, I felt, required more than one person.

I turned to look back outside, and leaned my forehead against the window. There should have been more than one person here. I didn't know where they were. Probably at home with their families. I wouldn't blame them really, but it would have been nice if they could at least let me know they weren't coming. Maybe they had thought that I would figure out that it would be silly for them to go out in this kind of snow, and therefore they didn't bother telling me they weren't coming. Either way, it was Christmas Eve. The time of good spirit. They should have told me.

I breathed on the window pane to make it all steamed up, and proceeded to draw a star with my finger. It was a Christmas star. Like when Jesus was born, and the star showed the old men the way to him. I suppose I hoped a little that the star I drew would show my friends the way here through the snow. I soon realised how ridiculous that sounded, and rubbed the star out with my sleeve.

Then someone knocked at my door, and my head turned in that direction. Maybe my star had shown them the way after all, and they would all come in and we'd laugh and play and have fun and give out our presents. With restored hope I got up from my seat and opened the door.

There was only Malik there. His nose was red from the cold, and his hair was covered in snow, as were his clothes. He must've had at least two coats on, and the scarf he was wearing covered his mouth. He held out a badly wrapped present with a bow on towards me, and I smiled.

"Happy Christmas, Ryou."

So…yeah. A bit weird, but there you go. Happy Christmas, everyone. Reviews would be nice; consider it a Christmas present to me, hehe.
