Prologue: These Thoughts Won't Leave Me
Jonah Morasco entered the small apartment that he shared with his mother hasitly. The chill of the cool wind had reddened his cheeks and made his hands feel like ice. He really should've worn gloves like his mother had urged him to. It was January, after all.
His mother came out of the small kitchen when she heard the door slam shut. She was wiping her hands on a dish towel while her shoulder length, thick blonde hair was pulled back in a messy ponytail. "Jonah!" She exclaimed as she eyed her son in disbelief. He was rosy cheeked and flakes of snow clung to his thick hair and lashes. She grabbed the old quilted blanket off of the back of the nearby couch and wrapped it around her son's shoulders. She slipped her arm around his already broad shoulders, rubbing his arm, and trying to warm him up. She made him take a seat on the couch before she pratically glided into their kitchen, coming back moments later with some hot cocoa with marshmallows.
As she watched her son through her blue eyes, she thought back to all those years ago when she'd first become pregnant with him. She couldn't believe how selfish she'd been back then. She hadn't really cared about the little boy who'd still been growing in her stomach at the time but now there was no one more important to her than her Jonah. He was without a doubt her most precious gift. He looked so much like his father from his facial structure to the light brown hair, though he had the shape and color of her own eyes. Her smile was bittersweet as she thought of Oliver Fish. He'd been one of the only people in that godforsaken town of Llanview who didn't see her as an evil bitch. Of course, Oliver was a nice guy all around and he had no idea that she had a big secret that she'd kept from him for almost fifteen years. And yet, he'd helped her get herself out of Llanview, away from Mitch Laurence, who'd threatened harm upon little Jonah when he'd learned that the child wasn't his grandson. No one else knew what Mitch knew though. Luckily. Or not so luckily. Her little boy had grown up without a father figure of any kind. And Oliver Fish would've been a good dad, had he known that Stacy's kid was also his. She just knew it. She knew that he was kind, gentle, accepting and everything else that a father should be. Why had she been so foolish as to try and pretend that Jonah was Rex's? If she hadn't done that, she'd be in Llanview right now and Jonah would've grown up with a dad.
"Mom?" Jonah's voice called out to his mother, snapping her out of her reverie. His brows were furrowed questioningly and he had a chocolate mustache above his lips. His eyes were filled with concern as he looked at her. "Mom, are you okay?" He asked of her.
Stacy forced a smile upon her lips and gently ran a hand through her son's hair and down his cheek and jaw. "I'm fine Jonah. I'm just thinking about the past. The mistakes I made back then. The things that I regret."
Next Chapter: A look at Kyle and Oliver, fourteen years later, Jonah finds a picture online that makes him decide to go to Llanview.
