Trust

Author's note: Hmmm…. What would happen if McCoy weren't at the reunion in Amok Time?

"Captain? Jim!" Spock grabbed him fiercely by the shoulders and Jim knew he would feel it later. The brilliant smile that lit up the Vulcan's face forced Jim to grin.

"Captain…" Spock's voice cracked, suddenly devoid of all joy as his smile withered. He lowered his head and his grip became lighter. Spock eventually dropped his hands altogether.

"Spock, what's wrong?" Jim became concerned as Spock's entire posture became more resigned than Jim had seen him in, well, ever. "Spock, what is wrong?" Kirk repeated.

"I…I am not worthy of your trust." Spock whispered, barely audibly. "I-I betrayed you." He continued. Kirk felt his heart swell. He drew Spock against him and gently wrapped him with his arms. Spock stiffened in response.

"Oh, Spock…you didn't do anything wrong, and you didn't betray me, either. I know you didn't have a choice." Kirk murmured soothingly.

"But, Jim I-"

"Shhh, no buts, Mister." Spock began to relax as he felt his Captain's trust wash over him. He then realized exactly what he was doing, and with whom.

"Captain, I tried to, to," Spock's voice was less then a whisper now, not much more than a thought. "to kill you. And you still trust me?" Spock pulled away, his head drooping.

"Spock, you're my first officer and my best friend." Kirk said, tilting the Vulcan's head up at him as he spoke. "I will always, no matter what, trust you with my life."

"Thank you, Jim." This time, as his friend pulled him in for a hug, Spock

self-consciously tried to respond by wrapping his own arms around Kirk

McCoy announced his presence (in his office) by putting on a data disk of a very old song called "Getting to Know You".

"Bones! Were you in there this whole damn time!?!?!" The moment ended. But somehow, both Captain and First Officer knew that somewhere, deep down, it lived on.
