A/N- Just a little Egoist drabble for ya; they're not my favorite couple, but they are the easiest to write about, oddly enough. Probably because they're so messed up! -giggle- Hope you like! -OA

It started out so simple, so very simple.

"I love you."

That was all it was, and they knew that was all it was, and they were okay with it. It carried them through years of being together, that plain, honest statement.

And then something happened, something got in the way. A continent was crossed, a division occurred, and suddenly everything was so confusing, so uncertain-

It was no longer simply "I love you."

It became "Do you love me back?"

It was difficult to say which one was more surprised when the answer turned out to be "Yes."

They thought that would be enough, that with those words they would be able to carry through. But there was more, curveballs that Life insisted on throwing- the bitch- and they were so unsteady, so wavering as they tried to ride them out. They weren't used to this, to depending on each other in this way.

"Maybe…I don't deserve you."

"Maybe I don't deserve you either."

"Maybe it's not enough, this feeling we have for each other."

Suspicions set in, misunderstandings run rampant… Both of them would be liars if they said that they never wondered how much more they could take. Two steps forward, and three steps back; it was like the morbid mantra of their union, trying to tear them apart.

All it took was that day at the hospital for one of them to snap, to lash out in anger, though not in the way anyone had expected. It had just been too much, seeing that intruder with his hands all over- mine, mine, he belongs to me, how dare you touch him like that?!

And they realized that in the end, it was inevitable.

"I…I love you, y'know…Nowaki…?"

"Yes, I know. I love you too, Hiro-san."

A/N- Ahhhh... I do love those moments when they get around to sharing their feelings with each other... Hope it was good! -holds out hands and makes puppy-dog eyes- Reviews, reviews for the poor authoress? -OA
