After Tessa's absence at dinner that evening, Jem had begun to grow concerned.
Several times, he found himself pacing in front of the door leading to her bedroom, without knowing just how he came to be there.
As he considered knocking, he heard approaching footsteps, although the owner was still out of sight. This spurred him on, and after four unnecessary deep breaths, he lifted his fist and knocked hesitantly on Tessa's oak door.
Unbeknownst to Jem, Tessa was with Will as he knocked, in a way that would likely, cause a look of hurt to cross his pale face.
After no reply, Jem's worries increased. He opened Tessa's door to the find the room occupied, in a way he was not expecting.
A gasp of surprise escaped his chapped lips, alerting the occupants of the room, to his presence.
His blood brother, Will turned to face him, a look of barely concealed alarm crossing his face. He stuttered out his name, whilst his face turned the most peculiar shade of scarlet.
"J-Jem?"
A face peeked around Will's bare shoulder. Tessa looked flustered, her hair matted and stuck to her sweaty forehead. Her eyes the color of the sea being consumed by a storm, were clouded. Forming in their depths, was an odd look of panic.
"Will, Tessa."
"Uh Jem-" After succeeding in producing a coherent thought, Tessa begun to attempt and explain herself, but she found herself being cut off by Jem.
"I see I have interrupted something" His voice sounded hollow even to his own ears. Jem continued his insides churning "I shall return at a more convenient time for the both of you"
He turned on his heel and walked the short distance to his own bedroom, all the while feeling as though someone had burned down everything dear to him right before his eyes, and laughed whilst doing so.
Although, he didn't know whether Tessa or Will caused the most of his pain.
