Even though he is my apprentice, Chowder was my son from the start. From the very first moment that I held him in my arms, we had a special bond. A bond stronger than any…
"Mung, Whatcha thinking about?" Chowder said. He walked across the kitchen and stood next to my chair. Mung picked him up with a smile on his face and sat him on his lap.
"I was just thinking about how much has changed since you came around…" He replied. It was then that Mung realized Chowder wasn't wearing his hat because his ears drooped.
"Oh I see…" He replied, "Mung, I'm sorry about today… I didn't mean to eat the dish. Are you still mad at me?" He said with tear filled eyes.
"Ah, Chowder… I wasn't talking about that." Mung wiped away one of his lose tears. He looked confused. "I was referring to how much you have grown since the very first time I met you…"
"Oh. Mung, how did we meet? I forgot…" Chowder said with a sheepish smile. Mung chuckled.
"Well you probably don't remember Chowder because you were a baby…"
Ten Years Ago
Truffles and Mung were walking home from a lovely night out at the park. It had gotten dark and they were in a hurry to get home.
"Come on Truffles. The nearest turn is two blocks away. It would be faster to just go through this ally." Mung Daal said to his wife.
"But Mung, It's an ally… There could be weirdo's living around in there." She replied.
"Don't worry. Weirdo's only come out during blackouts." Mung said as he wrapped an arm around Truffles. They started to walk into the dark ally. Their eyes quickly adjusted as they soon saw their house. There was a sound, a muffled sound. Both stopped and listened. They soon heard soft and quite crying noises. Mung walked over to where the sound was coming from, only to see a small moving bundle in a crate. He picked it up a realized it was a baby. "Truffles, it's a- it's a baby…" he stammered. She flew over to see. In his arms lay a sleeping, purple, plump, cat bear rabbit thing.
"Oh my goodness…" Truffles breathed. Mung looked at her.
"I think we should take him inside, get him something to eat." Truffles nodded in agreement.
"So, we kept you and here you are today." Mung said, finishing the story. During that time he had carried Chowder up the stairs and was now tucking him into bed. "It sure has been fun though, teaching you and taking care of you even when you mess up."
"Well I'm glad that I have you as a great Chef to teach me!" Chowder said with a huge smile on his face. "Mung… If you found me does that make you more than a Master to me?" Chowder asked, taking Mung a little aback. He wasn't sure how to answer.
"Chowder… you are more than an apprentice to me. You are almost a true son. I love you as both, so I will be whatever you wish for me to be." Mung replied gazing at the boy he was proud to call son.
"I guess it is the same for me then!" Chowder said. He jumped up from under the covers and gave his father and master a hug. "Good night Mung."
"Good night Chowder." Mung said as he got up to leave. He turned the light out and watched as the boy place his head back down on his pillow. Mung felt tears sting in his eyes as he thought about how wonderful his son really was.
