Author's Note: This is my first Gossip Girl story. I am new to the fandom but I love Dan and Blair so I was inspired to write this.
The church had been beautiful. Of course, it was everything that she had planned to perfection for months.
Her dress was everything that she had dreamed it would be. Vera Wang.
It was made personally by Vera for her.
It was perfect.
Even Louis was perfect. He understood. He was forgiving. He was charming.
Blair had her very own Prince Charming.
She probably couldn't count the number of women that envied her place right now.
Standing at the alter listening to a Prince read his vows that he had written to her.
She felt warm inside at the words he was saying. A smile spread across her face. The levels of love and devotion he felt for her actually took her by surprise.
Blair had no idea. It erased all of the doubt from her mind that she was making the right decision.
Here with this man, ready to face their life together, was where she belonged. She could feel that rightness of this sweep across her skin and made it tingle.
It was all going right until he finished his vows…
"And just remember, that when you feel like you're going to lose everything that you'll still have me."
Her eyes sought him out in the crowd. A lump was in her throat. There were tears at the corners of her eyes.
She found him easily. He was a personal guest. So naturally, he was sitting in the front pews closest to the altar.
Dan was staring at her. Just as he usually did but there was something in his gaze that she only just recognized.
Love.
But it wasn't just love. It was devotion, belonging, trust, respect, and happiness.
Blair couldn't breathe.
Dan was happy for her. Of course, he was because he just wanted her to be happy, and so he had written vows to her, given them to her fiancé, and was sitting there as they were read aloud to a world of strangers and her.
That's the kind of guy he was. And now she could see that Dan would do anything for her happiness even if it meant sacrificing his own.
Blair could see the incredible pain etched onto his face. His dark eyes were deep and just staring right back at her.
They just stared at one another. Her heart was pounding in her chest. She wondered if he could feel it even though he was so far away from her. Their connection was that real. It was that deep. The world was just meant for the two of them. She could see it now.
For some reason, even though she was standing at the altar with another man, she had to let him know she knew.
She knew everything now.
Blair mouthed two words to him.
It's you.
Dan got the message, somehow, and looked down suddenly. He had broken their moment whether on purpose or because he couldn't take the weight of it Blair couldn't tell.
But she felt the loss of him and of their connection.
So she refocused on her husband to be.
They continued with the rest of the ceremony.
They shared a sweet, chaste kiss.
They were pronounced man and wife.
They were Prince and Princess.
Blair was in a world of her own. The people cheered. Louis raised their joined hands in triumph to the crowd.
She could hardly care. She was going through every moment she had ever spent with Dan. And she almost became physically ill with one more realization.
It was Dan.
Dan was it.
How could she have not noticed it before? Her eyes became blurry and she sought him out in the crowd.
Again, she could see the pain on his face. It was such a beautiful face when she really looked. And right now, she couldn't help but stare at the one man who really knew her… and loved her anyway.
He had been right there in front of her all along. She had never seen it. How could she have never seen it? He had been right about so much. She was scared. Maybe she had been scared of them, of him all along. Maybe that had prevented her from really seeing him.
But now her vision was crystal clear and she was still scared. She was scared she had made the biggest mistake of her life.
This time it was she who broke their gaze.
Blair couldn't take it anymore. Her heart was breaking in her chest. She tore her gaze away and turned toward Serena who was standing next to her.
Serena was beaming. Her golden hair piled into a halo on top of her head.
Blair took the bouquet from her friend. And as their fingers brushed, Blair gripped a hold of Serena's hand tightly, needing to hold onto something with the force of all of the feelings hitting her. She was spinning out of control.
Serena gave her a funny look and spoke, "Blair?"
Blair blurted out in a whisper. "It's Dan. Isn't it?"
Serena's face changed in an instant with shock but no confusion. And that was all the confirmation Blair needed.
Serena nodded.
"Yes."
It was the simple word that cut through Blair's heart. Louis began to tug her down the aisle. She wished she hadn't witnessed that soft whisper of victory flutter across the blonde's face. It was mixed in with devastation but Blair caught it all the same.
Blair knew what it meant.
Dan was Blair's.
But now she couldn't have him.
And of course, Serena was happy about that. Blair could almost understand it.
Almost.
Blair steadied herself against the hurt she was feeling. She couldn't break down in front of all these people.
She wouldn't.
So she walked back down the aisle, a married woman, a newly crowned princess, and all she could think about was that if she hadn't been so blind… maybe she would have been able to marry the right man, today.
The man that wrote those vows.
End.
