Title: Time To Say Goodbye
Fandom: D.Gray-man
Pairing: Kanda x Lavi, mentioned Allen x Lenalee
Rating: K+
Warning: Angst. Speculation.
Summary: You are never coming home.
He is in Paris, hunting down one of the few Akuma still wandering aimlessly through existence following the death of the Earl, when his meticulously constructed I'm-perfectly-fine-don't-worry-about-me charade comes crashing down around his feet.
After all, it isn't every day that one sees a ghost.
Lavi (or whatever his alias is now) hasn't changed, not in the slightest, since it ended (the war, the Order, everything), and Kanda isn't sure if it would hurt less if Bookman Junior (or is it just Bookman now?) had the decency to look at least a little different.
But he doesn't, and now Kanda is painfully aware of the slight lines in his own face, the aching bones, the other evidence that he is slowly withering along with the lotus in its glass prison.
But he swallows his pride and strides towards the other man anyway, tapping him firmly on the shoulder and crossing his arms as he waits for the redhead to turn around.
He is slightly smug when surprise registers briefly in a green eye, and that smugness grows when surprise is replaced by trepidation.
But even he is slightly awed by the complete dead flatness of his voice as he speaks.
"Allen and Lenalee's wedding is on the 24th. They'd both like it if you could be there."
And he turns his back on Lavi and walks away, promptly vanishing into the crowd, his mind back on the mission and definitely not agonizing over red hair and a green eye, over what he could have said, done, felt.
After all, he has no reason to be guilty over leaving without saying goodbye; he is merely returning a long-overdue favour.
On the 24th of June, Allen Walker and Lenalee Lee are married. Lavi does not attend, Kanda loses his last hope of seeing the other man again, and life goes on.
