The Right Thing But The Wrong Choice
Rating: G
Pairing: David and Mary Margaret
Spoilers: 1x06
Summary: David lay awake in his bedroom next to Katherine and all he could think about was Mary Margaret.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
He lay in bed that night next to his wife Katherine. She was sleeping. He was staring at their ceiling. His eyes were focused on a watermark. He could remember that torrential rainstorm that had caused the water damage.
He had just never fixed it. But did not care at that moment and did not guilty for never having given it its proper attention like he had promised Katherine.
And to be honest, his mind was far, far away from that room, its ceiling, and his broken promises.
He was still standing underneath the old toll bridge.
He was going over every move Mary Margaret had made.
The smile that had disappeared from her red lips when she saw the disappointment on his face.
He had had to tell her he remembered. Not everything but enough.
He had had to do the right thing.
Mary Margaret had told him that the right thing would have been not to lead her on.
It had not ever been his intention. His feelings for her were like nothing he had ever felt. The feelings were intense, and deep. They clouded his mind from everything else and at the same time made everything so crystal clear.
Yet, he listened to his head and not his heart.
But he was lying next to his wife. Holding onto what his sense of the right thing was and what he had to honor. He remembered enough to have to be there with his wife but all he could think about was Mary Margaret walking away from him with her sweater wrapped tightly around herself in a vain attempt to protect herself from the hurt he had caused.
And for some reason, David knew in his heart of hearts that he had done the right thing.
But he knew that he had made the wrong choice.
End.
