Sometimes, she fancied herself a hero.
Well, heroine, she corrected, mentally silencing her inner feminist that came out at the worst of times. Yes, sometimes that's what she fancied herself; a tragic heroine, saving lives and taking names. At least, that was her mantra.
When Dedealus Diggle called out the number of dead Muggles found every day, Marlene would reply, "Those are numbers, Diggle. We're saving people."
When the Order found Benjy Fenwick's bits, Marlene consoled his wife with, "He was a good bloke and we're going to continue his legacy."
When Caradoc Dearborn went missing, she drank a shot of Ogden's Finest in his name with James, Sirius, Remus and Peter.
But, she wasn't sure when the cracks in the perfect picture started appearing.
When suddenly Dumbledore's speeches about "being the light in these dark times" didn't spark up her spirit. She wanted to believe, mind you, but seeing her friends dead bodies strewn across the floors of their homes broke her heart, and by the time she had pieced it together it was too late.
Death had come knocking at her door and wrapped its spindly hands around her neck. Death, the feared king, that she had spent all this time fighting, took her life with a simple Avada Kedavra.
She had been the last one. They hadn't spared anyone, not her crippled grandmother or her niece Caroline.
"Marlene McKinnon, after all this time."
She had to admit, she had done a damn good job in her time with the Order, contrary to what others thought. Marlene wanted that to be written in the history books.
She could almost feel Dorcas Meadows' disapproving glare at her antics with Lily and the Mauraders; but they were young and fighting for their lives, so what if they didn't act like young ladies and gentlemen?
And as Death had taken her last breath, she welcomed him with open arms.
After all, isn't that what heroes do?
